I know that this may seem trivial, but I'm not here to spread copyrighted material through the internet. In fact, I want to share with some of my distant friends videos created with my digital camera. These videos usually are around 20-30 MB in size (depending on the quality), but are too large to send through regular e-mail means.

I've tried FolderShare and found that I ran into a stumbling block on both my side and my friends. We all have the same issue with the firewall. I believe that on my side it's the fact that I'm using Windows XP Pro, while on their side, they are also using WinXP with a wireless router (built-in firewall). I'm not sure what I can do on my side to allow them to download my files, let alone on their end for me to download their stuff.

Are there better programs out there where I can upload large files to a server and allow the other party to download it? Can FTP storage servers be purchased for a reasonable amount of space that have the flexibility for at least 2-3 users to download/upload simultanously?

I'm trying to find most efficient way to transfer these large amounts of data in the most convienent way, and I would appreciate anyones suggestions or comments.

Thank you,

PiCASSO

Indulge my ignorance: What possible damage may someone cause if I was to disable the "Internet Connection Firewall"? I'm currently using a DSL service through Sympatico (www.sympatico.ca), which is tapped through a SpeedStream 5200 ADSL model (ethernet to the computer). My main issue is that I'm concerned about the security measures of people hacking into my computer.

Appreciate your feedback,

One of the friends has the wireless network, where from time to time, the connection is lost through MSN. Does MSN allow for large file transfers? What's the file limitation?

Thanks,

As has been said before, backups are nearly as important as your heartbeat. icon_smile.gif

If you turn off a firewall, you are subject to hackers and certain new worms, like Sasser, that don't need e-mail. Still, the actual chances are pretty low that a hacker will be interested in you, or that Sasser will ever bother with you.

I operate with a firewall and without at times. I have ghosted my OS drive so that if it's hacked when I'm operating without a firewall, I can get it back quickly and easily. I use a program called Norton Ghost. (Symantec) The only time I have used it is when a drive physically fails, which has happened to me twice in 10 years.

My advice is to know the risks and be prepared if you are caught by them.

HTH (hope that helps)
