MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) - Michael Schumacher failed to win the pole position Saturday for the Monaco Grand Prix, where he will be trying to win his sixth straight race to start the season.
Jarno Trulli of Italy captured the first pole of his career. Schumacher, who was bidding for a 60th first place on the grid, had the fifth-fastest qualifying time.
If Schumacher wins Sunday, he will establish a Formula One record for victories to start the season, and equal the best winning streak in a season at six. Alberto Ascari won the last six races in 1952 and added three more at the start of 1953 in a Ferrari.
Trulli powered his Renault around the winding, narrow streets of Monaco in 1 minute, 13.985 seconds. His previous best qualifying in Monaco was in 2000, when he was second on the grid.
On Saturday, Ralf Schumacher was second in 1:14.345, but will start 10 places back because his Williams-BMW blew an engine earlier in the race weekend. Jenson Button, in a BAR-Honda, was third fastest in 1:14.396. He will start on the front row, alongside Trulli.
Trulli's Renault teammate, Fernando Alonso, was fourth fastest in 1:14.408, with Michael Schumacher fifth in 1:14.516.

Hell, if Schuey was perfect, he'd have the guts to race his team-mate.

Rumor has it that if Schuey should retire there's a warm seat waiting for Button at Ferrari.

Ross Brawn said a few weeks ago that they were keeping an eye on his performances.
Trouble is Braw, Byrne and Todt are due to leave when Schuey's current contract is up. I doubt Ferrari would maintain their performance after a mass exodus.

Button has already said he wants to stay with BAR, can't see him moving in the near future..

Apparently Williams are considering Button for next year, but on current form he's better off at BAR.

Wasn't the first time Schuey's caused an accident under the safety car by braking heavily. At Monza a few years ago he caught Button out the exact same way. Also, if MS hadn't bottled JPM up JPM would have avoided the Ferrari.
Funny how we get a cracking race to the finish once MS is out of the race?

Seems even the FIA stewards don't think JPM was to blame:
