This is such a general problem i dont know if anyone can help but i will try my best to describe what is wrong.
It all started when i was using a bittorent program called azureas. It generally uses up a lot or ram and i had too many other programs open while using it so everything stopped responding and the whole computer locked up so i restarted it.
When i tried to use azureas again it was getting errors with corrupted application data files so i ran a scandisk and found the corrupted files. Azureas was stilll getting the errors though so i reinstalled it and everything was fine.
But since then whenever i try to open a folder it wont open, the window appears but whats inside of it doesn't and the whole system locks up. Almost as if its using all the cpu speed and can't open. So i have to end task it.
Thats the best i could explain it and if anyone can help at all i'll be very thankful

Look at the performance and processes tabs in task manager and post the results here.

what the heck is MoreResults?
Sounds like you have been infected somehow. You should run the latest AdAware with the latest reference file.
Also, scan for EVERY possible virus, worm, and trojan
I really don't want to ask why you are using BitTorrent. I hope it was for something good like curing cancer or saving mankind, but you may have screwed yourself with all those dubious peer connections out there waiting to turn your system into a Zombie.
You may have to repair your OS if possible or re-install.

Ok thank you i am running ad-aware now and don't worry I was merely using it because i was trying to make my own torrents for downloadable content on my website i am working on. I am not into that whole "warez" thing

Although i was trying to get around to saving mankind....

EDIT: I ran Ad-Aware and found 409 items
Folders open now and computer is faster. Many thanks to you Mandark

Run spybot also it picks up some adware doesn't.
http://www.safer-networking.org/I use both together.
At work on 1 PC Adaware picked up over 1000 objects.

Just for the record: I ran Spybot last night, and the only good thing about it was that it set a system restore point before disabling my internet access...I checked every single entry selected to be removed, noticed nothing suspicious, but on restarting I could not connect to the net.
System restore helped, praise WinXP.

hmmm. just out of curiosity. You wouldn't be running Azureus BT client would you?
A simple yes or no would suffice.

Yep, that would be the program I was using.

odie: yes
in case you asked me

But no internet connection was working, not only some programs.
And don't consider BT as utter evil, a lot of LEGAL FREE DOWNLOADS are available over BT. (Linux distros, officially free bootlegs, n stuff)

That explains why you're comp is freezing... I had the same problems last night with Azureus... it keep freezing my damn desktop... I think it had to do with the "update" released late last night. And I have been using Azureus for quite a few months now.
It locked up my internet connection, my desktop, I had to manually reset from my case to get the system to boot up.
Because I haven't used it since and no freeze ups or anything.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree... 150%... Azureus is a rich, feature filled program. It kicks ass.

alot of those hokey programs hook the LSP layer. When you remove the spyware, you cannot get to the internet cause they do not reset the LSP layer.
There is a small and free utility that will restore the LSP layer and you will be able to reconnect to the internet... hang on and I will post it...
here...
http://www.spychecker.com/program/lspfix.html
run the lspfix.exe file, you will see the crap it wants to remove. If you have AntiVirus software installed, there may be a handler in there it wants to remove, you can check the "I know what I'm doing" box and keep the AV DLLs but not any of the spyware shit.
That program has saved me countless hours of reinstalling windows on family and friends machines after we scan and remove spyware.

My internet was working top when using azureus, just last night it went tits up... it has something to do with the updater.. maybe the servers were flooded.. who knows
I have no spyware on my machine per 4 programs...
Adaware
S&D
Pest Patrol
and... Spyblaster

obviously, it does mess with the Winsock 2 stuff or it redirects the hell out of you.... like you said, when you removed it, your system worked.
LSPFix is just when you get rid of spyware and you can't get onto the internet. It is usually the LSP protocol handlers have been changed and not restored. This is a handy utility for doing just that.

After doing some research.. i narrowed my problem down to ZoneAlarm 5. Apparently its clashing with some AV suites. I went back to 4.5 and all is well again.
