my computer has suddenly got a problem with its sound...its OS is win XP

The sounds and audio device properties show no audio device..
audio and voice settings are not highlighted..
and the hardware devices list show all audio devices working properly except C-Media AC97 Audio Device..its status shows "this device cannot start(Code 10)"..
when i tried to reinstall from driver CD(ASUS P4B533) i found the audio icon not highlighted in the driver cd..anyway i uninstalled and reintalled it with hardware installation wizard...after installation it showed that the device might not work properly and the problem persisted...

Finally i formatted my C drive and reinstalled win XP..but still the problem continued...
plz guide what to do in this regard..

First thing that comes to mind is to check your BIOS and see if the onboard sound is enabled. From what it seems like, that may almost be your problem.
