Okay, I need to get a new HDD. I'm thinking about something in the 120-200GB range. I was chatting with two old duffers last night and found out that Western Digital is suffering form the "Click of Death" on drives over 100GB. THe same two octagenarians expressed negative views on Maxtor. Yes, we've been over this before...
So, which would it be?

I would choose Maxtor currently, BUT I do like the new Seagate drive coming out with native Command Queueing (SCSI feature) but that requires a new motherboard to support it.
So my current personal choice would be Maxtor drives with 8 MB cache.

I think if you do some checking that youll find that Segate is at the top of the reliability rateing right now. I bought a Segate based on this, I have no favorite brand one way or another.
I dont know about the Hitachi, but I think everyone remembers Hitachi/IBM's GXP destaster.

I have no favourite brand for any computer hardware, its all down to reviews etc
I have had a WD 120gig PATA and a 120gig SATA drive both die so I won't be buying WD for a while.

PATA or SATA do you think?
Jason
Jun 6 2004, 10:45 AM
There is no speed difference in the first revision of SATA unless you get the 10,000 RPM WD Raptors but I would choose SATA if your motherboard supports it just for the smaller better cables.
Bit of information Intel have implented SATA correctly which means XP requires no extra drivers but Via motherboards implements SATA via an "add on" chip so requires extra drivers which you install by pressing F6 as you would Raid cards.
The price differenece is non existant now between PATA / SATA so go SATA.

There seems to be many more rebates/deals on PATA than on SATA. I want to get some SATA drives but the PATA deals can't be beat! There is still a price differential in my opinion when you factor in the rebates.

Serial drives are 5 to 20 bucks more than their EIDE twin.

I buy based on price and 3 year warrenty. I have never had hard drive troubles with any brand. I have 9 running.

I think only Maxtor has the three year warranty? Maybe Hitachi too...

I just bought a Seagate last month with 3 year. Warrenties are where you find them.

I'm kind fond of Maxtor, but I have to agree buy on price, performance (based on reviews)trading off as needed to meet your needs and 3 year warrenty.
SATA is more likely to be compatabile with future upgrades, but think is it worth $20 now, to
MAYBE continue using a type 1 SATA drive when newer, faster, cheaper (per GB) drives are aviable.
PATA is best for MB's with NO, or poor SATA support/performance.

Despite the fact that my Western Digital Hardrive was only 80gb and not in the 100gb+ range, it bit the dust after 7 short months, lost everything. I replaced it with a 80gb Seagate and love it!! I think Seagate is the best buy right now.

Why not get Western Digitial to replace it? It must still be under warranty after only seven months!

Seen 2 scsi drives below cook the one on top in a 3 drive cage...
My cage has a fan as well to keep the air moving across the drives, heat bad for pretty much everything...
I would go with SeaSnake's as well, rarely have we had any of them go down...

According to AnandTech's site the Raptor seems to out do the Max3 in most test, but the technology of the new Maxtor would make it my first choice.

Seagate has a drive of similar spec out soon and for native command queueing you need a new motherbaord to support the feature

Antec makes hard drive coolers. I saw one yesterday in Circuit City. I know CompUSA sells a lot of different types of hard drive coolers. Check their web sites for prices.

Looks like we are misunderstanding one another. I am talking about the Maxtor hard drive, not the Western Digital. I think you are referring to WD. WD does not have any native SATA or command queueing hard drives yet.

I have three Seagate 250GB, 7200RPM 8 MB, running in ARGOSY AL external usb cases, I try not to leave them running as the cases are fanless. I have a WD 200 in a like housing, you can feel the diference in temp and hear the difference in noise. Seagate is cooler and quieter, and the three year warrenty, they win hands down. Sam's Club's WD's are marked 1 year warrenty. I stopped using WD when they cut the warrenty, if they don't think they are good I'll agree with them.
