I'm just wondering... coz I still remember all those years ago when they had sound cards like the Gravis Ultrasound that could reproduce realistic 3D positional sound using just two (well-positioned) speakers... but nowadays it seems you need at least 4 speakers to get any good positional sound?

I've been looking for info about this but can't seem to find any.

what player are you using?? I know there are some plug-ins for winamp that to a decent job with 3d sound. I'm sure the others have some too.

I use musicmatch w/dfx plugin and it does a pretty good job with 3d sound. icon_twisted.gif

sorry I should've been more specific: I meant 3D positional sound for games, e.g. A3D and EAX positional sound.

So if some guy shoots you from behind you can hear the gunshots behind you, etc icon_biggrin.gif

Using 2 conventional speakers, or headphones. Can it be done? icon_smile.gif

My sound card is an SB Live! 5.1 DE version.

Like Mbeeston said, the best is to get a 4 or 5 speakers setup. But you can get really good results with headphones when playing games where audio positionning is important. A pair of Senheinser will do a beautiful job !!!

I use to have 6 speakers and 2 subs hooked up to my computer, but one night I was awoken to the sound of the rear 3 dieing. Then I just had my 3. Well in the move to college, I only brought 2 and my sub. It's not bad sound, but I also have a headset which I find to be very nice with my SBLive Value.

This brings up a question I have as well. I play games that require a lot of voice commuication so I need an actual headset, headphones with a mic boom. Is there anything good like this anyone can reccomend of high quality? My right earphone fell off as I smashed it into the desk icon_eek.gif one day during a game. Though I won't be doing that again as it gets expensive. Right now I am using the headset that comes with the Microsoft Sidewinder. I want to find a better one that works with this and just want to know if there are any other options.

I don't think I could recommend this since it is not everybody who has a webcam, but when I play games that support voice communication I use the built-in mic in my Logitech QuickCam Pro 3000 and it works great ! I think the problem with headphone/mic/headset combo is that sometimes, the quality of each components is not too hot...

Hmmm, I suppose I could most likley rig something up for the mic if I have to. I'll have to find headphones that will plug in to the sidewinder. Thanks.
