help.gif I had shut down the whole computer a few months ago. And when I set it back up I had decided to change my internet provider. So I uninstalled my AOL 9.0 program, and that's when I started having all kinds of little anoying problems. I have managed to correct most of them, like getting my new printer to work. The computer did't want to change from the LPT1 port to the USB port. The computer didn't want to let me get back on line. Now it won't let me run my HP software so that I can use my digital camera, or access my photos. The computer keeps telling me that it cant find the aol.exe. file to run the program. Now I cant shut the computer down using the start menu. Every time I try and shut it down itwill immediately go to restart and reboot itself. Nothing in my computer for dummies books is any help, sohere I am. I'm running windows 98se. I have tried making start up and boot disks and have a copy of windows 98se on CD. any help y'all can give would be greatly appreachiated. My frustration level is pretty high right about now. I'm lost with no idea where to go . icon_exclaim.gif

Slightly off topic but related, if your computer is quite new as in the last few years, then I would get an upgrade copy of XP Home (around $50 as a guess), it will be far more secure, give you less problems and be more enjoyable to use.

My experience with peeps and aol , you are going to have to format and reinstall 98 if you keep it.
othewise go the xp root as J says.

I had a similar experience with AOL. The best thing to do is reinstall windows. I know that cured it for me. If you can't reinstall windows, for whatever reason, then backup your registry, then very carefully remove every reference to AOL. Also, delete all of the AOL files and directories. My recommendation is to reinstall windows but the other option should get your PC working again.

Hey guys thanks for your help. I had planned on getting back to y'all sooner but I've been in the hospital fer a while. Anyhow I ended up dumping my operating system and everything back to a bare computer and reloaded everything. And low and behold all my problems went away! Now I can enjoy my computer again! I had a couple of miner glitches on it when I got out of the hospital, but I managed to clear them up alright.
Anyway I just wanted to say thanks fer all yer help. I'll probably need it again sometime in the future. Glad to know theres folks out there who'll lend a helpin hand to computer illiterates like me.
Thank Y'all
