Online Tech Support: Your Cox Representative, Agent 5, has arrived.
Agent 5: Welcome to Cox High Speed Internet Service Online Technical Support.

May I have your phone number with area code of the primary account holder and full cox.net email address, please?
Ghandi: 316-722-5362 *******@cox.net
Agent 5: You can connect up to 3 computers using our service via a hub. For a complete list of equipment need, you can access our Customer Support page at support.cox.net.
Ghandi: is that going to have wires running all over the place?
Agent 5: Yes.
Ghandi: can i just use a cable splitter and have it going to another room and connecting to cable modem?
Ghandi: much like tv's
Agent 5: No, that cannot be done, it needs to go through the modem.
Ghandi: that's what i said
Agent 5: Each connection need to go through the cable modem.
Ghandi: yeah...Ghandi: ... and have it going to another room and connecting to cable modem?
Ghandi: which connects to the ethernet card
Agent 5: No, through the modem first.
Ghandi: the cable connects to a cable modem then connects to a ethernet card which is inserted in a pci slot which is connected to the motherboard....
Ghandi: isn't that what the connection is?
Agent 5: Yes.
Ghandi: so why can't i do that?
Agent 5: The coax cable goes to the modem, the cable that comes out is an ethernet cable, not a coax cable.
Ghandi: i know
Ghandi: but if the cox cable is run to a splitter and one cable goes to one room and the other to the other room and each into a cable modem through and ethernet cable to the ethernet card which is inserted in the pci slot which in turn is in the motherboard
Ghandi: wouldn't that work?
Agent 5: You can only have one modem per account.
Ghandi: why?
Agent 5: That is the way the network is set up.
Ghandi: can't it be assigned a different ip address?
Agent 5: No.
Ghandi: why is that?
Agent 5: Because that is the way the network is setup.
Ghandi: that makes no sense
Agent 5: Perhaps not, but that is the way the networ is designed. Is there anything else I can help you with today?
Ghandi: what's the hub cost?
Agent 5: We do not provides the necessary equipment, so it would depend on where you purchased it.
Ghandi: but you told me earlier:   Agent 5: You can connect up to 3 computers using our service via a hub. For a complete list of equipment need
Agent 5: Yes, for the complete list of equipment NEEDED.
Ghandi: ohh...i see
Ghandi: but couldn't you put a total restriction size on the two IP's?
Agent 5: No.
Ghandi: I feel that your irritated with so I shall be going now.

that took about 18 Minutes

after all that i think it is crap that i can't have two connections like that.
~sid~

wtf ghandi... why can't your have one cable modem hooked to a router or hub and run ethernet?

you CAN do that.

dude, he was not bullshitting you.... they will not allow just any cable modem to attach to thier network. he was absolutly correct. when the cable modem logs on... the head end checks it MAC address. A corresponding account must exist for that specific modem. If you hook up more cable modems, the head end will not allow them to log onto the network.. that is another billable account. they charge for each separate cable modem. AND, your signal would get degraded and may become useless tot the cable modem if you split the cable.

The filter they use between my tv and modem is a 60/40 filter.. it routs 60% to the modem and 40 to the tv. With the line split in two and not filtered or amplified properly, if the original signal is kinda crappy to begin with, niether of your modems would work.
Mandark
you are better to run ethernet cable anyway.. you would have jsut as many wires running all over the place as you put it....
Treytor
Mandark is correct. Agent #5 was right. I have my cable modem connected to 2 computers via a hub... each have thier own IP. Works like a charm.
odie
and besides... hubs are dirt cheap...
Ghandi
never said he was wrong...

the computers are in two seperate rooms about 30ft apart.

i won't be able to drill holes in floor to run ethernet connection under the house.

current holes are two small.

can't run them around the house.

i was looking for options and still am.

it seemed like a nice cheap solution. Agent #5 was very vague on it's answers. Yet I don't see why the filter thing can't be used for splitting the rooms.

we already have an account with them for cable and internet.
Jason
Setup ICS on the one connected to modem and connect 2nd PC to 1st one by a wireless connection.
Ghandi
i don't exactly have $200USD to have a two computer wireless network.
Jason
I know its expensive, its just one of the options.
Mandark
so what don't you understand about the splitting thing. Each modem connects the your ISP's head-end. The head end inspects the MAC Addresses of every modem trying to gain access to the WAN.

They would not recognize the modem you bought from best-buy and hung on their network. Thus, the head-end would not give the second modem access.

II you ask the ISP (cable modem/internet provider) for another cable modem, they would run a new cable connection and give you another modem for the other computer. then they would charge you for another account... so that would be way more than 200 wireless connection...

you could run the ethernet cable through the walls if there is already a phone line very easily with some fish tape. Hell, if you have a phone line to the rooms, use the phone cable instead of fish tape to help run the ethernet cable.

use a wireless hub...
