p5151 or P/F-82 TWIN MUSTANG

The need for a long-range fighter to escort
bombers to Japan resulted in the development
of the Twin Mustang. It had two fuselages that
were similar to that used on the P-51H, but they
were lengthened from 33 feet 4 inches to 39 feet
1 inch. This was due mostly to a plug in each
fuselage, but the larger vertical tails also
contributed to this increase. However, the aircraft
was far more involved than simply bolting two
Mustangs together. The second of the two XP-82
prototypes is shown here with a standard P-51D
in the background.
