Full Version: If you are still using 9X, tell me why??

bull
In the days of NTFS and XP/2K, who here is still running 95, 98 or ME??

Just curious why you still are and if you plan to upgrade?? icon_twisted.gif
Jason
I see no reason to stick to an OS built on top of 16bit DOS when there is a fully 32bit OS like XP .
bull
I agree Jason. I just wanted to turn the question around on certain people...LOL icon_lol.gif
Jason
I know just giving my opinion icon_biggrin.gif
adhesive
yeah, I wanna know why ppl use those too icon_confused.gif
~sid~
money is a big one
Petyr_Wrath
My rents went back to 98se after XP gave them a ton of problems. I didnt have the time to be there to fix every screw up they made, and thats exactly what it was their screwups.
MadCow
Well if you look at many small business they still use 9X os's. Why? cus it does what is need. And they don't have lots of money.
Eldaah
Yeah, I'm sure its mostly the money thing, and the others that don't see the gain from an NT kernel. I enjoy buying all of my Microsoft products for $5 from school rather than full price icon_mrgreen.gif

My sons computer dual boots 98SE and Windows XP because some software (Like Harry Potter Lego Creator) won't run on Windows XP.
Just2Rommy4You
I use 98 because it's better...

1) "16 bit dos" beats the hell out of fake dos in XP because i can have real DOS coexisting with win98. The fake dos that comes with XP/2k is worthless if the OS ever crashes. hence if a virus corrupts windows, you will need to reformat. I will not...This lack of real DOS makes then newer OS's suck a lot...

2) Compatibility-how many times do you hear about software not running in newer OS's? On the other hand i have never seen software that doesn't run in 98.

3) LAN Parties. Win2k and XP can share files with each other. It is a huge pain in the ass to make them network with 98/95. 98 on the other hand networks with everything beautifully.

4) No built in messenger. here's a fun thing to do. Go into DOS while on a LAN and message a 2k/XP computer. net send COMPNAME Fuck you. Then watch them cry in pain as any game running crashes and the message "fuck you" is displayed. If you change your computer name you can get away with it too. Untraceable. If you can't figure it out in DOS, go do in from winmessenger.com . 98 doesn't have this built in crap.

5) Directly competitive 3rd party software works. I hate the way that 2k/XP make programs such as Netscape perform worse although from Microsoft's standpoint, it's a smart move.

6) NTFS sucks big time. If there is a problem installing it you will need to reformat your HD. Once you get it installed you need a seperate partition to dual-boot. What the fuck!!?? WHy can't microsoft find a way to make XP and 98 work together? Oh wait; it's because M$ sucks and purposefully made it so you couldn't do it on the same partition without a lot of work.

The rest are strictly XP related:

7) 98 isn't a MAC. that's what XP is. A fucking MAC! It looks like a MAC, navigates like a Mac, and has cheesy hold your hand help files that tell you squat like a MAC.

icon_cool.gif No worries about MicroCRAP. Security breaches, more integrating, etc. I don't want Microsoft owning my computer.

I'm tired of typing but those are amongst the many reasons why i will never pay to get 2k/XP
Mandark
oh boy.... we got live one here.

We'll go easy on him. Oh well, I have never had any problems with 2K or XP running games.

BTW... messenger service can be turned off... i NEVER leave that useless service running.

Your LAN party dudes don't know how to configure the OS.
dorokhin
You tell them brother! 98 is the shiznit. XP and 2k are microtrash
Just2Rommy4You
Mandark...

1) you probabaly don't play enough classic games to have problems. Ever tried getting the original version of NHL 95 (maybe the best game of all time) to work with fake DOS. Good luck...

2) It obviously can't be turned off easily since the people there were all computer savvy and they were all getting really pissed off. The average user has no chance of figuring it out before it hits him.

But those were minor points...My main problems with the OS are 1,3,7,8
AceHigh
I have both 2K and XP, and what do I use? 98SE! I did not studder, that's what I said. Why? unlike some of you, I have absolutely no stability problems with 98. I never crash at all and I can walk into any computer store and buy just about anything, hardware, software, games, go home istall it and be off and running in no time, no fiddling around, looking for drivers, configuring compatability mode, or anything.
Ghandi
98SE.

why you ask? simple. not every company has updated all of their drivers.
my scanner won't run in XP, so no XP.
~sid~
Should we let Mandark loose?

in responce to Just2Rommy4you....

1) Xp does not have FAKE DOS, it has NO DOS...its called a Command Prompt...that uses Advanced Administrator, and window commands...most not available in 9x...

2) Well, i dont want an O/S slut...to have consistency, and reliability you cannot have EVERY POS software title work...that creates problems...To work with w2k/xp, the software has to pass test to become certified...9x, ....what test?....

3) err, w2k/XP are NETWORK o/s's...your problem here is not with the o/s, yet the disk format...

4) want to crash 9x?...hmmm, how many ways are there....and using net send command does not crash a xp box when its running a game...

5) Netscape is crap...thats why AOL, the company that owns it doesnt use it...they ship AOL with IE!!!....

6) NTFS is one of the best file structures available to date...If the install fails, NTFS can tell you why, with FAT, you cant...AND...you never ever want to install 2 O/S's to the same Partition...thats newbie mistake #7

7) XP is far from Mac style...M$ o/s have just as much in common with MAC's, that Macs have in common with M$ o/s's...they all derived from 4-5 o/s of yester year...

NOW...ill let Mandark loose....
bull
~sid~ beat me to the punch. Basically, I ran 98SE and crashed and crashed and crashed. I had shutdown problems.....yadda, yadda, yadda.

Since I have switched to XP, i have had every piece of hardware and software work without a hitch. I have to kids and they run some very old games without a problem in XP.

But the best thing for XP with me is networking. I am stuck on dial-up until god knows when (live in the boonies...nothing available). My internet on XP is considerably faster and more reliable. I used to dual boot and dreaded going online in 98.

Basically no OS is perfect. I am of the belief that you should run whatever OS runs best with YOUR computer. Remember, no 2 are exaclty the same.

And dammit ace, i have never spent any extra time worrying about compatiboity with XP....everything i have and have bought has run like a charm! Maybe I'm just lucky!!!! icon_twisted.gif
dr_geek
Tell me again why xp is so great?
bull
OK mister, i'll put it in 4 simple words:

BECAUSE I SAID SO!!!

and I'll deal with you later!!! icon_twisted.gif
Eldaah
Heh, 9X sucks compared to the current systems bottom line. Anything that says other wise is false.
Mr Magoo
ace- if youve got 2k and xp, where did 98se come from?!

anyway- i think 95 because its reasonably compact, and j'adore the ancient interface.
Mandark
point 1 makes no sense whatsoever. never had a virus corrupt windows yet... rarely get them at all. I use a professional anti-virus program (NOD32) that has never missed one yet. My hardware firewall and ZoneAlarm Pro keep 99.9999% of viruses from even creeping into my system(s) in the first place.

At our LAN parties.. we play Unreal Tournament, Q3A, Half-life/Counterstrike and now MOHAA so no, I have never tried nhl 95.

I make it a point never to use 16 bit applications as well.. except.. I do use Caldera DR-DOS (formerly Digital Research DOS) for my BIOS flash boot floppy. If not for flashing BIOS, I never use floppies... for anything.

Grown-ups make Boot CD's these days.. using Advanced tools like BlueCon Boot or ERD Commander. And grown-ups most always use NTFS as the one and only FS on their Win NT/2K/XP systems so we don't ever have to be botherd about fixing our file system again as it is completely self healing and ultra super stable... no more oops! hard-reboot/fix the file system bullshit... even then, scandisk is a POS and screws up the FS. It does more damage than good half the time.

Your "computer savvy" users are not so savvy if they don't know how to look at and alter the services running from the control panel. If users dont know how to configure their OS, then they are not so savvy as you say and that proves it.
Eldaah
Blamo!
Just2Rommy4You
Sid:

1) As i said before. No DOS means that you get screwed with viruses.
2) The testing thing is bullshit that you pulled out of your ass. there is no test. If there was then no new shareware would work. Case closed. Don't make up stuff. Conistency is important but being consistently bad is not good. Hence 2k/Xp are not good.
3) They are network OS'es alright. They network with each other. backwards compatibility is a bitch because M$ wants you to pay another 200 bucks to upgrade to their new OS.
4)There are no ways to crash a computer running 98. It can crash by itself just like 2k can. I've seen enough people crash while using 2k. 98 at least doesn't have the net send....and yes net send does crash games. I was having a lot of fun crashing games at the last LAN party on saturday.
5). Netscape is good. Especially Communicator. Get with it. AOL is shipping its new AOL with NETSCAPE; not IE. Get your facts straight.
6) Or it doesn't tell you crap and the only option left is to reformat. It happened 3 months ago when a friend convinced me to try to install 2k. Why the fuck wouldn't i want 2 os'es on the same partition!?? It would be great but alas M$ gets the last word.
7) You saying no it doesn't actually does nothing against my point. The GUI performs like a MAC according to many reviews so your opinion here is a little too subjective.

Sid; between making up stuff and not having your facts straight you are really making a mockery of this debate.

As far as the dialup thing goes, my 98SE connects my 56K modem at 53,000 bps. I am always downloading on Kazaa (just downloaded UT) and it always gets about 5K when there are good hosts online.

Eldaah; i have nothing more to say than "contribute or shut up". Obviously me, dorokhin, and Ace both like 98 more so maybe you should consider that you might be wrong...

New games might work fine in 2k/XP but old games do not. old hardware on XP is even worse. I'm not saying that XP and 2K suck; i'm saying 98SE is better.

Madark; yopu've proved nothing. i do the net send trick at my school. We have 2 IT people who took a week to figure it out. There is nothing obvious about this messenger. Don't claim things to be true when they are really not...
dorokhin
bull; you have a point in that people should use whatever OS they like.

anyone who thinks that they can objectively argue that 98SE is an inferior OS to 2k/XP is just regurgitating Microsoft's meaningless sound bytes. They all have their benefits. As pointed out, there are some definite areas in which 98 is better than XP/2K. The original question proposed in this thread was "why would someone still use 98." I think that has been answered quite thoroughly.

I wouldn't mind the upgrade to XP/2K if it was free but it is very difficult to argue that XP/2K are worth the money that you need to spend to buy them.
Eldaah
I'm really personally couldn't give a shit if you use and like 98. 98SE was defienatly the best ofthe bunch. However, most people here who have had extensive experience with 9X and 2K/XP agree that 2K/XP run much smoother than 9X ever could. I've had uptimes of over a month on my box running 2K. I use to be proud if my 98SE was up for much over a week.

Yes, I agree having to pay for new OS' does suck but from the goodness of 2K, I feel it's worth it.
Mandark
his points are rediculous

1) virus's can be defeated without reformatting. I have NEVER had to reformat because of a virus... an I do not know anyone who has.
~sid~
what does dos have to do with virii? you can make M$-dos boot disk in wxp...and if you use a newer Asus mobo, you dont flash your bios from floppy anyhow...but if you need to have a ERD, then make one in xp...simple...dos is old, and crap...

also, wxp supports more hardware, old and new than 98 does...so how is it that 98 is better for hardware?...also, why would you want to use 98 in a network setting?....

i guess thats why mcse's make money, cause they know their stuff....

and what is real dos?....please...dos is the cause of most problems with 9x o/s's....

and 2 o/s's do not go on the same partition...never...OMFG...for one...simular files tend to become corrupt....1 problem (virii) can damage both o/s's...

do you not know how to manage a system, is that why you choose 9x?....to many advanced options for you?...
Mandark
amen brother... amen.

yes, and Just2Rommey4U...

Your IT people are retards if they can't figure that out. They are not real engineers.. just wannabe flunkies.

My point is this, if you just install an os and dont look under the hood and figrure out wtf it does, then you deserve what you get.

I would have packet sniffer running and capture all your bullshit. I would have KNOWN who the fuck you were and you would have been kicked the fuck out of my school. You see, packet sniffers look at all information traveling on the network... and as soon as I decoded your silly fuck you prank.. i would have all the info (ip address, etc, etc, ) i needed to get you expelled... you can't spoof your IP on DOS either... no raw socket's here!

You lam-basted NT based systems for have built in stuff, and eluded to the fact that you could play dirty tricks, whoopie shit bag. The fact that you deal with morons does not prove me wrong.

I will say it agein, if you don't know what Services are... you deserve what you get when dealing with malicious little script kiddies....

sorry Bull....
bull
The only thing that I would add is that, like I said b4, I have old games and some older hardware that runs just fine in XP. I ran Madden 95 in XP, so i'm thinking that nhl 95 shouldn't be much different. You should see some of the old kids games that my kids still have or have had given to them, no problems.

I had tons and tons of problems with 98SE with my system. I know that Ace has had superior luck with 98SE. XP is better for me, 98 is better for some. I did not start this to be a flame war AND PLEASE CUT OUT THE PERSONAL CRAP!!!. I wanted to follow a discussion on the 2 OS's.

Personal attacks and name calling do not make a good point!!! Lets' keep this to an adult discussion, please. icon_evil.gif
Just2Rommy4You
Let me summarize for you mandark...the fact that you've fixed the problems in the OS doesn't make the OS better; it means that you've put too much effort working with an inferior OS to make it up to par. 99.9% of people will NEVER figure out how to turn that off.
AceHigh
That's enough!
bull
I removed a couple of posts from Just2Rommy4You. That was getting out of line and there is no place for that crap here. If someone wants to have a civilized discussion, please start another post. But the language and name calling will not be tolerated!!!
