I have a 256MB generic unbranded Hong Kong mp3 player bought from e-bay. "upgraded" firmware screwed up the controls. It seems as though all the buttons have become scrambled. The "hold" function is "off" in the "on" position and vice versa, volume down button starts the record function. It still works as a storage device though. The ON button doesnt work, but when connected and then disconnected from the PC, the player stays ON and then I cant turn it off!

I've opened up the player and it has a chip with Samsung 446 written on it. Then k9F2G08U0M. The "firmware upgrade" software says that the device name is "S1 Mp3 Player" Productor [sic] Wilson Co. Ltd. Version 3.0.37.

Any help is greatly appreciated. There is a similar thread at http://www.fileforums.com/showthread.php?t=67337 which has ground to a halt.

It's past its warranty date so any help is appreciated.

Acer MF-350 S1 MP3 Player - MP3 Player

Is that it?
Mandark
can i ask why we have at least 3 different threads all pertaining to these mystery mp3 units that get fried by an erroneous flash program?
bull
I believe a Google search may have something to do with it. icon_wink.gif
Mandark
these unbranded things are terrible. I don't know if they force the upgrade, but if they don't PLEASE do NOT upgrade them. Some retard wrote some retarded code and screws them up completely.
uNtOldPAIN
Sounds like they are trying to unlock something...considering MP3 players should play MP3s...Im sure it did when it came out of the box icon_wink.gif
Mandark
when they plug them in to USB ports I guess the things says they should upgrade the firmware as far as I can tell from the other forums posts

basically, my viewpoint is this, i NEVER flash anything unless I am having a problem with something. with those units, not being able to play mp3's would be one of those situations but then I would just get a replacement from the dealer or manufacturer.
shytalk
telling me that I shouldn't have upgraded the firmware isn't much help. does anyone know how I can fix the problem?
uNtOldPAIN
once you flash it...its done from what Ive always been told..

hi
if it helps I have the same MP3 player, no problems as yet with firmware upgrade settings or any thing else, however try this link to the manufacturers in China, http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=...6lr%3D%26sa%3DG
Look through the products list to help you find the one you have.

Thanks
Mandark
please o' please 'o please DO NOT FLASH YOUR MP3 players EVER

they work when you get em, they work as MP3 players, and they work as USB Flash drives.

WHY would you mess with it! It is NOT an Automobile that can be modified and fixed when you break it

Just learn your lessons now and don't do it again... now go all buy iPod 4G 40 GB units, Mini's or Shuffles please and be done with all this silly flashing

Tell you what, all other MP3 players I have ever used or heard blow chunks next to iPod. The iPod is KING and sounds so good with good headphones. You really DO get what you pay for.

I was lucky, some guy had 4G 40 GB HP branded Apple iPods in his trunk all shrink-wrapped (and hot as hell) for 250 dollars about 8 months ago. Retail, those things were over 400 (close to 500) USD, but after hearing it and using it daily for those 8 months, I would pay 500 bucks for one. They are THAT good.

OH YEAH, You really CAN flash these with iPods own software

Don't settle for cheap in this area. As you can see what cheap gets you. Now you all have to go buy more cheap MP3 players.

I'll guess this is the same as the SUMVISION MP3 player also branded differently and sold by Gembird; their site has a program that will recognise the mp3 player if it is one of theirs and offer a firmware update - see the link

www.gmb.nl/drivers/ghe.zip

The sumvision site is currently unavailable, but I guess this is just temporary

You buy it, it works, then use it and dont fiddle with things.

You buy it, its faulty, dont fiddle with things and send it back for a replacement!

The machine doesnt tell you to upgrade, so why does everyone upgrade? wallbash.gif

I am with him ^^^^^^

IF IT WORKS and plays MP3s fine then DONT FLASH IT !!!!

I've done the same "error" when I tried to update the firmware! I've brought it today 8.gif

In the user manual... they said to check their site to check if an Update is available to improve the performance of the player. After I've updated the 3.0.42 version... it was dead.

When I try to recover the original version (3.0.25) the computer crash. And I've tried with 3 other comp... the same things happen :'(
uNtOldPAIN
SO the manual is sending all these peeps to the site for firmware.... icon_eek.gif

Firmware should be used as a last resort for any product....If it doesnt work right then you flash the firmware...BUT if it (mp3 player) is doing what it is made to do then why are you guys trying to improve what already works icon_question.gif

I think by upgrading they think they may gain other functions, like turn it into a 19" lcd monitor and play DVD's on it, or maybe a toll free Cel Phone with full access. cocky.gif

Please does anyone know where can I find firmware for Mach Speed 256MB MP3 Player(http://www.machspeed.com/mp3_player.htm)? Soon after I´ve bought it the firmware got f**ked up. It just displays starting and does nothing more. help.gif Thank you

I'm surprised at people here... Something that works as it should with absolutely no troubles should not be upgraded. My question is what exactly is it that these "performance enhancements" do to the player that makes it so tempting to "upgrade"?

Unless its a computer (which are always being tweaked and/or updated) I would NEVER update the firmware. Unless its a system that does it automatically from its own vendors site (e.g. the PSP) that is a quality company (Sony's always been in the biz thumbup1.gif ) then dont try to fix what isnt broken.

I was surprised to see how many people wanted to improve upon something that already works how it should work.

You should never flash your player unless you know 100% for sure that you have the correct firmware, and feed back from other users. I've never had any problems flashing my two MP3 players (Zen Micro, & iRiver screw Apple!!). There is only so much you can do if you flash it with the wrong firmware (unless you have the right tools). Normally what you're flashing the device with isn't the complete firmware for the device, just updates.

hehehe,

that statement makes it sound like you are jealous of Apple and the massively successful iPod.

I don't know about any of you, but I have 40 GB of the best sounding MP3 and M4A audio that plays for 12 hours on a charge. Could not beat the $250 price for my 4th generation HP-iPod....

icon_wink.gif

If you had one, I am sure your comments would be a bit different. 40 GB is HUGE. I don't need any other players.

I tried iRiver and took it back. I do have an Archos 20 GB player and HATED it until I found RockBox Open Source code to run the unit. Now it works great due to the excellent open source os that makes it run so sweet ant offers tons of features unavailable in the standard interface.

I'm glad you're happy with your Ipod. I just think they're over priced, and over hyped . I like having freedom /w my music, plus I prefer oggs over every other format. I only have the Zen Micro because it's size, and the price. Plus I did have an Ipod mini, but I gave it away.
Earthman
Manny.. I will agree with you on this one...

The Ipod is the best music player that I have ever used, and probably will ever use... I have the 20gb 4th Gen, and wouldn't switch to anything less than an ipod now that I have used it... I've used the iRiver, as well as the Dell units as well, and found that the ipod puts them both to shame...

well mainly i feel why do ppl wanna update their firmware.. well bec the option is there.. the damm player has in its menu (firmware update) even in the cd rom, includes a firmware.. and u know.. firmware.. update.. would be good.. as it may make ur player do new better stuff (that the common belief)

i too and one of them *suckers* that bought the 256 mp3 player... the one with the 'wilson' chip..

anyways.. SO far .. so good..
and it cost me... about US$50.. aint thta bad right $50 for a 256 thumb drive that can actually play mp3... as comapred to the creative model that cost about us$30 more...

apple and creative are no doubt ... good mp3 players.... get em.. if your a serious MUSIC fan.. why not.. but if you want somehting small, simple... and something that you wont make a fuss if you lose it.... them cheap wilson mp3 players.. aint 1/2 bad..
visual
*sigh* quick update...
funny these damm mp3 player..
my player.. batt status was at the last bar.. so i didint care.. i just let it played... till it started ot get buggy...
then i tried to off it.. but i cant it kept pausinga nd advancing to the next song...

so.. i took the weak battery and replace wiht a new one...and then the display is illuminate d(in green) backlight.. but the mp3 player.. is dead..

i pressed all the buttons.. but it just didint response..
i tried ot plug into my pc... i was detected as a USB device but was not detected as a thumb drive (this ono drive created)

so... my mp3 player is messed up and barely 1 month old!!!

anyways.. cant fget my money back.. will have to wait 10 days to get it replaced by the suppier...

so.. i htink.. take ur chance...but...i kind of wish i had topped up another us$30 and just gotten the creative player.. sigh..

oh by the way.. when it was messed up.. i didint try to 're-flash' but no avail.. its messed upp.. even thought i didint flash it tobegin with...

Ok, first of all, if you haven't messed with the firmware yet... don't.

Find someone, anyone, with the same MP3 player... Tell them to open it, and look for files that AREN'T songs... Tell them, then, to make sure they're showing hidden/system yadda yadda files.... Now, have them grab any of those files, throw em in a zip file, and send them to you...

Now, unzip those files, copy them to the MP3 player, and try it... If it works, GREAT, if not, then perhaps look at a firmware issue... Chances are, you cleared it, and accidentally deleted necessary files...

Even if it doesn't work, it's worth a shot, and a whole hell of a lot less destructive than a bad firmware upgrade...as I'm sure you've gathered if you've checked a few of these forums.

Listen up again peeps, now gather around tabletalk.gif

1. If it's broke, take it back.
2. If there is a problem with it, ask the the seller to provide a fix.
3. If there is an "undocumented firmware upgrade that has to be translated from Chinese" -- DON'T.
4. If it's an upgrade from a reputable site, confirm the support before upgrading.

Why oh why must people do this stuff without verifying that it actually works with their product. fragend013.gif

hey guys i finally got my mp3 player the 's1 mp3 player' replaced... yep.. it was spoilt 2 weeks after i bought it.. and after almost 2 months of nonsense form the shop.. i got an 'almost'new one... but i have a feeling it has new firmware.. or rather a newer bath form my old one.. as the old one (didint have radio *altho the box said there is radio*) the old one.. had to press the power realy hard to on it.. this one dont need to, and well when i plug in to my usb.. (with out even onning the device...) it switches on it self....

hope it can at least last for about 5-6 month..

I would go into the MP3 player a "COPY" all the files and stash them somewere....just in case....glad it worked out for you thumbup1.gif

Mandark,

There is actually a lyrics function on the player, and it works fine! icon_wink.gif

The only problem is that it only work for separated .LRC files! icon_cry.gif

Ipod = WAY TOOOOOO EXPENSIVE! I can't pay for that! icon_cry.gif if I could...

Important - Please Read

Look, I know that so many people have said that you shouldn't upgrade the MP3 player, but that is NOT what the original person asked. Anyhoo, I had a botchy upgrade as the MP3 player I brought (branded SupportPlus) said it had a radio, but didn't on the original firmware. Although the firmware had locked my MP3 player completely up, I found this to work:

Step 1. Press and hold the power/play button for about 5 seconds and plug it into your USB port (after the 5 seconds).
Step 2. Whilst still holding the power/play button, continue to do so for 10 seconds or until the MP3 player is recognised on your computer.
Step 2a. My MP3 player then initialised a "Player Recovery Device" as the driver that was to be installed. Make sure you have the Firmware Upgrade program on you to install those drivers.
Step 3. If you have the SigmaTel firmware download upgrade program or someother one, then simply run the Firmware upgrade and your MP3 player will be as good as new.
(Note that it didn't work on my IBM Thinkpad 600X, but did work on my AMD Athlon 2400XP+ my built PC.

If you don't have the SigmaTel firmware, then I can email it to you, just use the e-mail system on this forum to do so. Also, you may have another firmware program to upgrade the firmware, and I cannot see why it wouldn't work.

Anyway, I really hope this helps you, and let me know how you get on with it. I know it works on mine (and it looks identical to most of your's shown (thumbstick type)), and I hope it works on yours.

Hi All
I Just purchased an mp3 player (packard bell audiokey 256) from a market stall on the understanding that it does not play mp3's but works fine as a storage device..
anyway on returning home i checked out this mp3player and its functions to find out that it is also a voice recorder which still/did work and it will play music if you rename them V001-V002 etc in WAV formatand in some cases it played mp3 but only if mixed formats???? it was as if the player could not determine the format in most cases except .WAV
anyways after alot of messing with the player i thought that maybe the firmware could do with an upgrade taking into consideration that it does play mp3's but does have a mind of its own, so i got the software from the packard site upgrade software and tools..icon_smile.gif so far so good i put the player in and followed the instructions and near the end it all locked up on me but never seemed to finish properly so after a while i removed the player and now i cant seem to turn it on what so ever no power and when i put it in the comp it dont show up?????

anyhelp would me most appreciated..

TIA

I have the same problem. My one decided to halt copying to or from the MP3 player. Incorect Parameters error. Player didnt even work. I decided I had no choice but to format. Now I can copy to it and from. But only 497mb visible and is/was 1gb before it pooped up.

Device Name: S1 Mp3 Player

Productor: Wilson Co Ltd

Firmware : 3.0.43

Does anyone have this firmware, so I can try reflash it with the same will that work.

Any ideas. Got it from Ebay months Back. Happy Shopper Asian one. Doh.

Thanks

Seems that most of the brands purchased cheap at Ebay are dying or crippled if you try and flash them. Hmmmmm, wonders if they are selling them there cheap for a reason icon_wink.gif

I feel very sorry for the person who started this thread.

Trouble is, the user manual for the player (mine, anyway) SUGGESTS updating the firmware! It says "Firmware upgrade is an operation to promote and optimize the performance of the player..."

But having read these posts, and noting that mine actually works as it is, there's NO WAY I'm going there!

However, I did find this site, which may be useful:

http://www.s1mp3.org/en/docs_advanceduguide.php

It's not for the faint-hearted, though...
