Full Version: DSL vs Cable

Here's the deal, Verizon is now offering their DSL service with up to 3M down and 768k up. About the same I generally get with my cable connection at a $20/month savings. This coupled with my switch to Vonage could easily net me an extra $70 per month. Might not seem like a lot but it could net me two new games a month or at least a new pair of kicks.

Anyone have experience using both? Or what about DSL in general?

DSL is fine here , never a glitch

DSL usually has no cap either...
up here in canada...cable has low caps...dsl no caps at all...

but then again...we have 10mbps service on cable...where as DSL only offers 5mbps max...

cable is usually (here in the USA) 256k up...do with DSL if possible

My cable is 1mbit up and 8Mbit down icon_smile.gif

My lame assed DSL was 384k down and 128k up for only $10 less a month.

I'm getting about 5MB down and 1 up with cable, just trying to justify spending the extra $20/month on that speed difference isn't easy.

To me, it would depend on how much d/ling you really do. If you think you don't d/l that many games (and "ahem"-other stuff), then I think the DSL option would work just fine.

WHOH...thanks for making me look at my cable provider...They are offering 6M and 768k now...for $10 more thumbup1.gif

Ill be setting this up tomorrow on the phone dance.gif

Adelphia. I am/was paying for their 3Mbit down 256k up plan, but they gave us a free upgrade recently (didn't say to what, but DSLReports shows me at 1Mbit up and 8Mbit down).
AceHigh
Cox here, 5 meg down, and 512k up.

I actually had DSL getting about 600 Down and using Voice over IP .Had a few hicups with it .But i switched to Cable (RCN) Just ran a test
Last Result:
Download Speed: 10019 kbps (1252.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 744 kbps (93 KB/sec transfer rate)
I don't have any problems using the Voice over IP or the Internet at the same time
So far don't have any problems with Vonage.
No problem with the Router either as of yet
I would say whatever gives you the better up/dowl loads go with that .If it costs you and extra $10 a month well worth it

Here's the latest:

Verizon is guaranteeing 3MB down and 768k up.

I ran DSLReports this AM on my cable connection, it's registers slightly over 4MB even though Cablevision's own test claims 8MB+ with 960k down.

Am I really going to see a 25% difference in speed? I tend to doubt it. Gimme some light here!!!!!

Read the fine print carefully, I'm guessing it's still a 'best effort' service. and what you'll get is "up to" 3MB down and 768k up
DSL is distance and line quality sensitive, where as cable is more load sensitive.
The problem I have with Verizon is the year long contract, once you sign up it's very hard to get out of it, even if it's due to service problems without a big penalty.
I'd push cablevision to fix your connection and/or ask them for a retention deal (match Verizon's price).
Now once verizon gets FIOS in your area, the 15/2meg deal is a no brainer

Also be aware the speakeasy test on DSL Reports is being hammered right now due to the comcast upgrades and is not being very accurate to many locations. try some other tests/large downloads before you give up on cablevision.
if its really a difference between 3 and 4 megs the effect on websurfing is small, if you do lots of downloads or multimedia big bandwidth really helps, for games latentcy and reliability is most important.

I get the same deal from SBC-Yahoo! DSL. I pay $24.95 per month with no contractual obligation.

I do get 90% of my 3 MBit with SBC-Yahoo! DSL and I get over 90% on the uploads that I test from putting files on my FTP server from work (work has full, dedicated T1) so I know I am getting near the limits.

I am also pretty close to the switch so my speeds are wonderful from home. I use XBox Live! all the time and have had no issues whatsoever.

Reading all these speeds makes me jellous Speed here on dsl (private provider/phone company) is 384k down and 128k up thats for $49.95 a month. Sometimes it slows down below dialup. t

Mine is stable at those speeds, but I am in the same boat as you Steve. That is what I can get and what I pay...unless I want to pay $100 a month and still be under 1K. icon_frown.gif

Get cable, there's no doubt about it being faster, plus, you don't have to bother with DAMN ASS DSL filters. Cable is a lot more relyable.

Seems that FiOS is now available in my area...can get %MB down and 2 up for $35/month or 15MB down and 5 up for $45/month. Either of which is still a savings over my current cable that runs at 3MB down.

Go for it, here cable is must faster then DSL, but if the speed is the same go for it. We have DSL at work and never had a connection problem
