Here is what I have:

1 Linksys BEFW11S4 WAP with 4-port switch
2 Linksys WMP11 (1 in each comp)

I am able to connect to the internet without a hardwired connection and my dad who also has a wireless nic cannot get anything. He is connected to the wireless connection, but not assigned IP, Gateway, Subnet, etc. But all that is set to automatic. He cant get anything on his comp. Is there something in the router settings that I need to change or in the WindowsXP settings? Both comps are running WindowsXP Pro SP1.

make sure dad's comp is on the same channel at the access point. also make sure the wireless nic isn't near an electrical outlet with anything plugged into it.

Could follow this guide for XP and set up ICS (internet connection sharing).

The ICS server computer must have two network connections: one for the Internet, and one for the local area network. The Internet connection may be a dial-up (PPP or ISDN), cable modem, DSL, or other broadband Ethernet connection. The LAN connection may be a wired, wireless, or even a USB Ethernet connection

J, he wants to use the Router for sharing.... not a goven machine that always has to be on....

You may have to take the one Wireless NIC or PC card (whattever) back and RMA it. My father in law had the same problem with that same router... His PC card was jacked

See if your card works in his box and his in yours.

Also,

run a command prompt and ping localhost on the suspect machine. see if you get a reply, if no, then his TCP/IP suite of protocols are not fucntioning.

look at the device manager as well for devices not working or confilcts

post back soon

XP has this cool auto sensing thing for wireless networks and adapters. make sure all the standard services are turned on for that.

also, if he has a regular NIC integrated or installed in a PCI slot, make sure his network connection is not trying to use that instead of his wireless NIC or PC Card.

My sister in law had that problem cause she had an integrated nic.

you can check the connection properties by right clicking My Network Places and choosing properties of the network connection.

I was told through MSN he cannot get to the internet on his Dad's only, that is why I gave the answer I did.

I didn't fully read the question above, I assume dit was the same.

then he needs to switch cards with his dad and see if his machine can still access it to rule out the NIC.

then re-test his Dad's computer.... If his dad's now works and his does not, he has found his problem.

Ok, guys, i am on the road working for the next month plus, but i think the prob lies where my dads comp is and where the router is. It is TOOO far away.

thanks guys.

how far away is it.

if indoors and can be 90 feet.

and since yours is pci do you have to have a notebook wireless card?

i bought a pci card and after i opened it i realized my stupidity that i needed a wirless notebook card for it.
