U.S. says militants planning attacks in Saudi Arabia. Certainly, not helpful for stabilization efforts in the Middle East. But not astounding either that the biggest oil producer would be a target too! Some interesting new political configurations may eventually emerge from this mess. That is, when the terrorist's are eventually vanquished, and permanently dispatched. thumbup1.gif

RIYADH (Reuters) - The United States warned its citizens in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday that militants were planning fresh attacks in the world's biggest oil exporter.

A statement issued by the U.S. embassy in Riyadh said it had no specific details about possible targets or timing of attacks but advised Americans to keep a low profile.

Saudi officials were not immediately available to comment on the warning, but one security source said several previous alerts by Western missions had proven unfounded.

Saudi Arabia has been battling a two-year wave of violence by militants loyal to Saudi-born al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden trying to expel Westerners from the country and destabilize the pro-Western royal family.

Suicide bombers hit several compounds housing mainly foreigners in 2003 and gunmen waged a series of attacks against Westerners last year, including a daylight raid on the U.S. consulate in the Red Sea city of Jeddah.

Saudi security forces have also been targets.

"The American embassy in Riyadh advises all American citizens living in Saudi Arabia that it has received indications of operational planning for a terrorist attack or attacks in the kingdom," an embassy statement read out by an official said.

"The embassy has no specific information concerning timing, target or method of any possible attack(s)," the statement said.

Wednesday's warning follows a relative lull in militant attacks in Saudi Arabia. The last high profile strike was the bombing in December of the Interior Ministry in Riyadh.

Authorities have killed or arrested all but three men on a list of 26 most wanted suspects published in late 2003. But last month they issued another list of 36 wanted men they are still hunting down.

One of those suspects, Mohammad Ibrahim al-Hayyari, was killed in a fierce gunbattle in Riyadh two weeks ago.

Militants have killed 91 foreign nationals and Saudi civilians in the last two years and caused more than 1 billion riyals ($270 million) worth of damage, Saudi officials say.

Forty one security force members and 112 militants have also been killed in clashes.

I cannot ever see a day when that region will be 'stable'. They just seem to look at 'life' differently and seem to have little value for it. thumbdown.gif

bull, need a Hoover vacuum sand cleaner! Nut jobs still need to be contained, or safely neutralized. For example, quite sure the Iraqi Kurds and the Iraqi Shiites would love to handle a stabilization solution. These ethnic groups would make wonderful guards and relive our military from this current task! Df. thumbup1.gif

They are not stupid! Just intellectually sanitized, or brain washed Zombies! Apparently, that is the nature of some (not all) in this large group. We are at war as you know, simply because terrorists have no respect for human life-they just don't like us, or our allies. They kill civilians to terrorize a civilized population in order to cause fear and destabilize societies. Notice they do not go toe to toe very long, or often with many Marine and Army friends in Iraq. Many have have noted their fighting skills are about zero.

Obviously, terrorists can kill your ass if your hit in places that they are entrenched and fortified, and we need to root them out. The big thing for terrorists, is when they are strapped to some explosives in a crowd of women and children. Notice of late trains in the UK and Spain are good targets as well. Good targets for these nut cases are the innocent and unsuspecting people waiting in lines, or setting off IEDs at roadsides, i.e., blowing up convoys and building fronts.

Actually, cutting to the chase, all that is needed, is the will and fortitude to just kick their butts, with a spirit of national unity and effort! Df. thumbup1.gif

The only problem with that is that we are such a whiney-assed society, that will not happen. We have all these liberal weenies that can 'save' them.

I agree with your statement, but also it cannot stop in Iraq then. Our "friends" in Saudi Arabia are every bit as bad, but we let them go becasue they have all the oil. no.gif

bull, This is war! To your first, and especially second statement, Saudi Arabia is fast going into something called receivership, or a bankrupt operating status. This means that the United States and our Allies will take their sandy butts over at any time, i.e., until this condition at some future time is remedied. This is not a choice, but a necessity if Saudi Arabia is unable, or unwilling to halt the terrorist threat in their homeland. Especially, that is devastating their neighbors, and other countries about the globe. As with any of this stuff, people have the freedom here and abroad, "liberal weenies" and those without weenies, to voice their options and concerns as they wish infinitum. The facts of the day, are often what is acted upon, and in this instance, contingent on the increased violence and destruction caused by these eight balls. This continued violence will soon tip the balance unfortunately, i.e., to a full war time status. Df.

Unable or unwilling? They are paying for, harboring and supporting them. thumbdown.gif
