Coz
When I run the VPN wizard under XP, and I am allowing incomming connections, I check the hardware section and it says "No hardware capable of supporting incoming connections".

Whats the deal?
Mandark
you need another NIC... how many do you have? you need at least 2.
Coz
I only have one. And I did this before w/ ~Sid~ and Warcraft III. We got one to work.
pappy177
what are you trying to do coz? host a game?
Mandark
I would refer then to ~sid~
Jason
Here is a walk through of it:

http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/vpn_setup2_winxp.html

If you want a secure "tunnel" then Setup the VPN using L2TP (layer 2 tunneling protocol) L2TP/IPSec uses IPSec to provide mutual authentication between the user's computer and the VPN server and strong encryption for all of the data exchanged between the client and the server.
Mandark
wouldn't he still need dual NIC's or a separate VPN server to get into his own netowrk and allow others to connect?
Jason
He could make a tunnel from 1 place to another fine with 1 NIC.
vegetto34
maybe his NIC doesn't support IPSec in the drivers...
Coz
Jason that is setting up the client, and I am "good to go" on that one.

I can't get the "host" to work. It tells me there are no available hardware installed that supports incoming connections.
Coz
Ok, I found my answer on another forum site and posted it here in case anyone else needs the help.

And I guess you do not need two NICs for this kind of thing:

QUOTE
Ok, this is kinda weird, but it will work.

Pick someone to be HOST, someone to be CLIENT.

On the CLIENT:

Go to Network Connections.

Create a new connection.

Connect to network at your workplace.

Select VPN

Name the connection "LAN GAMES" or whatever

Check "do not dial the initial connection"

Put in the IP address or hostname of the SERVER - and since this is dynamic for most people, even on cable modems, I suggest you get with dyndns.org and get yourself a hostname for this part.  put it in this box.  If your IP is static, then put the IP in this box, save the hostname lookup.

Click to share with all users and add link to the desktop.

Now you'll be presented with a connect dialog box.  Leave it alone until finished with the SERVER side.

On the SERVER side, after you make a username and password for your buddy in the User Accounts control panel applet, go to network connections, set up a new connection.

Choose set up advanced connection.

Accept incoming connections.

In the devices for incoming, don't check anything.

Check Allow VPN connections

Put a check by your friend's name in the list of approved ppl

Put checks in the boxes for the types of networking protocols you want

Click finish

Now go to that connection and click properties.

Go to Networking, then TCP/IP, then properties.

Check Allow Calling Computer to specify its own IP address

Click ok until you're out.

Now on the client side again

Enter username, password

Check the box to remember

Go to PROPERTIES, then NETWORKING

Change type of VPN to PPTP

Click OK

And initiate the connection

That should do it.

This doesn't cover the ports in the firewall that need opening - Since I don't know what you're running I can't give you step-by-steps for that.  But the ports you need are 1701, 1723, and 500 if I remember right.  1701 is for LT2P, which requires a certificate.  1723 is for PPTP, and 500 is for the IKE service.

It worked, my friend connected to my machine. But for some reason while trying to play a game via LAN connection it didn't work.
Odd.
Mandark
so you did what Jason suggested and only created a tunnel... whoopie.. that is not real VPN.. notice the PPTP Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol?

What kind of crappy game is that? Does it not allow IP to IP connections directly like all the shooters?

Seems like a god-awful mess just to play WarCraft 3
Jason
When setting up the user account choose the group he is a member of wisely, don't make him part of the admin group.
Coz
No, I created a new user/pass for him and assigned him to the Restricted/limited account.

The game only supports LAN connections. If you want to play online you have to connect to it's own "matchmaking" service... and I... uhhh can't do that. icon_lol.gif
Mandark
dude.... buy a legal copy then
Coz
Hey now. Who said anything about illegal?!?! icon_evil.gif

AHEM!
Mephist
its not that expensive icon_smile.gif

blizzards games r worth buying, since they have battle.net, which is free (after the initial payment for the game of course)... might have to take a look into WoW of course, since that will cost monthly icon_eek.gif see if i actually have the time to maintain my character...
Treytor
make sure you both have ipx / nebeui installed
Jason

Netbeui won't work as a VPN as its not a routable protocol.
