this is happening on both my machine at home and at work...

the main problem, i can no longer ftp to either work or home on which i have ftp servers on each computer. i cant even ping either addresses unless im on the local network. outgoing traffic is fine, i can ping browse etc other sites.

mephist.homeftp.org / et.myftp.org are the two dns i am using. i dont think anyone can ping to it at the moment, the ip addresses ARE getting updated accordingly from each machine as i am able to ping the dynamic dns and get the right ip (which of course gets 100% packet loss unless i am on the local network).

on either networks, a Nokia DSL router is used to connect to the internet.

ipconfig on either machine comes up blank, ipconfig /renew comes up with "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for
this operation."

ive tried ipconfig on another machine at home and it comes up fine with all relevant ip data.

i still get the same problem if i force a dns (ie dont use dhcp server), and if i use the dhcp server. the dhcp server is on the DSL router.

as i have all relevant incoming traffic pinholed to 192.168.1.1, i would like my main machine to have this ip, thats why i disabled using dhcp and just specified 192.168.1.1

any suggestions?

When I go to ftp://mephist.homeftp.org, I get

FTP root at mephist.homeftp.org.

When I go to ftp://et.myftp.org, I get

FTP root at et.myftp.org.

I'd say your ftp servers are working fine.

Are you trying to reach your ftp servers with active or passive ftp? In IE, you can choose passive by selecting the checkbox that says 'Use Passive FTP'. However, for Passive FTP to actually work in IE, you must make sure the 'Enable Folder View for FTP Sites' checkbox is unchecked. Otherwise, you're in Active FTP mode and most proxy servers and firewalls aren't going to let that through, including most ISP's.

NEVER use IE ftp.
it sucks moose bollocks. (ask Jason what bollocks is)

use a proper ftp client. IE runs around doing what it wants on ftp servers. your decent client does what YOU tell it to do.
switching between port and passive mode is more or less all the options you have in IE...

that said, dyndns.org had some problems earlier. they seem to have fixed it now though...

Ah i see yes, i never did bother trying to actually ftp as i assumed that if i cant even ping then i wouldnt be able to ftp.... its really strange though. ping gives me 100% packet loss, try that. and im still puzzled about the fact that im getting no ipconfig info... icon_eek.gif

I tried to ping each one, even though I was pretty certain that it would not work. It didn't, although it gave me the IP address it was trying to ping:

mephist.homeftp.org - 210.55.76.53
et.myftp.org - 210.86.117.26

My guess is that either your ISP has ICMP traffic killed at their firewall (to help prevent DoS attacks) or the ping can't reach the server because it's IP address is NATed (Network Address Translation) by your DSL router. This is what I thought might be the case from your first post, because you mentioned an internal IP of 192.168.1.1. I also have that IP address internally because my Netgear router also serves as a DHCP server for my and my wife's PCs. It also keeps Time Warner (my Road Runner provider) from seeing more than one IP address on our connection and billing us extra for the second PC (bastards don't make enough from me already? icon_mad.gif ).

My guess is you'll never be able to ping your FTP servers from outside your network until you have colocated servers at a big hosting company. You shouldn't have any trouble FTPing to and from them, however. icon_biggrin.gif
