I can tell you that you should steer away from any Sony Burner. I've had nothing but problems with mine.
If you can find an "LG" model to suit your liking and price range, go for one of those. I got a Sony DVDR/W for Xmas and slapped it in place of my LG. Since it's a Xmas present I can't not use it, if you get my drift.... I wish I had my LG back.

If you are going to burn watchable DVDs....make sure you get the fastest DVD-R setting you can buy.
Almost 99.9% TV top DVD Players are DVD-Rs compatible. Now days $100 you should be able to get anybrand (almost) DVD burner and have it work.
I have a Sony DRU-720a I had problems at first...but after flashing the firmware on the DVD and Mobo I finally was all set. Nvidia NF2 and Sony burners seem to have issue playing with each other.

Why yes I do....CDRW....Im not putting it down...you bish

. But plextor is overrated. They were VERY good at one time BUT they have had some issues with mobos and one DVDrw they released is a POS. Im just trying to clear up some of th polishing that Plex has lost.
Back in the days...CD Burners were new and there were better burners out there..BUT these days almost any Brand you smack in your computer will do the same thing and as other burner. Sometimes they release a burner that has an issue...Plex has done it...Sony did it in my case...

running LG Super Multi's
LG drives support DVD-RAM, which is a HUGE PLUS...
i can backup on the fly to DVD-RAM, and its smart too...will copy over previous versions of the same file etc...
DVD-RAM is like having a 4GB removable HDD...
anyhow...not 1 problem with the Super Multi's...although they do not support bit setting anymore...you can get a fixed firmware...
do all my dvd burning on DVD-R, but have used DVD+R aswell...not 1 bad burn, besides bad VOB files...
