Ok, suppose you have a Asus Nforce2 Mobo w/ the onboard Dolby sound chip and every imaginable output for any imaginable speaker system.
What would you get?
Now remember, the board
decodes in Dolby, so you don't need a external Dolby Decoder.
And of course you would want seperate inputs for each speaker. You just wouldn't be able to have 3 plugs for 5.1 speakers. You can use a S/PDIF input or have a plug for each speaker. You don't want to insult your on board sound by plugging in 3 measly speaker wires. You want to take advantage of every channel... to it's fullest.
Oh, one more thing; you are extremely broke because you bought that Motherboard.

So dont go throwing up links for that Klipsich $400 speaker (which by the way, only has 3 inputs which is garbage because it "simulates" instead of actually utilizing all the channels)

I got the Labtec pulse 424 3.1's. They rock for a mere $50.

Correction: The 5.1 Klipsch speaker system IS 5.1 seperate channels. Each analog plug is 2 channels.
Green analog = Front Left / Front Right
Orage analog = Rear Left / Rear Right
Black analog = Center / subwoofer

I believe Altec Lansing has a set of inexpensive 5.1 speakers, but I do not know how, or if, they are worth the money you pay for them.

Creative Labs Inspire 6700, 6.1 setup with out the decoder - great price and great speakers
But I would go with the 5700 as you get the decoder box which does more than just decoding it gives you lots more control over the sound of the speakers.

Those creative 5700s are over $200.00! $200.00! For speakers?!? Tiny speakers too. There are about 100 other things that cost $200.00 and you get allot more bang for your buck! Just ask Odie, he can come up with a certain street corner or something I am sure.
No way brother.
The Klipsich are even more expensive then the Creative's! Something that costs that much and still utilize the old "2 wire" speaker hookup system instead of the new and much improved RCA type speaker hookups? Nope. Sure they have like 400W. But I am two feet from my monitor now. 400W will blow the rest of my falling hair out of my head.

Although connecting through a SPDIF is best as you get a digital connection.

I found a set of Altec Lansing AVS500B 4.1's at Circuit City for $49.99. I realize that Coz is looking for 5.1's, but I thought this was a pretty good deal, so I'm passing the information on to you good people.
Citcuit City also has a Cyber Acoustics CA-5001 5.1 speakers for $79.99.

roger that J-Man,
darn it coz, you need the Reciever/Amp.. or just forget Dolby Digital.. and that almost single-handedly defeated the entire purpose of the nForce. You will get stuck with Analog... but oh well.

These speakers get a good rating Coz. I bought the 2.1 version for my daughter.
But am afraid Mannys right, the idea of the nforce is the digital dolby, and you need an amp and a good set of speakers for that.
I believe mbeeston also gave you a good suggjestion with the 5200s but you were too busy complaining to respond to him.

Thank you all for your help. But I decided to stick with "name brand" and "familiarity" over anything else. Creative makes the SB Live card which gave me nothing but problems, so I ruled them out. Yes, thank you anyway Mbeeston.
I currently have a Yamaha 2.1 speaker setup for the past couple of years and have never once had a problem w/ them... so I "upgraded" to these:

Cambridge Sound Works makes creative speakers and they are a VERY GOOD speaker maker just look at some of their hi-fi speakers.
I hope the ones you chose connect via SPDIF, don't want no nasty analogue connection.

Killer speakers. You do realize that part of that 170 dallars is because of the built in dolby digital decoder, which you already have on your mobo.

Coz, I just noticed this on the Yamaha link you put up for your new speakers:
QUOTE
Built-in Dolby Digital®, DTS®, and Dolby Pro-Logic® decoding for premier theater-style surround sound.
Distinct Speaker Modes for any application:
5.1-Channel System for DVD movies, games and music
4.1-Channel Surround Sound for PC and Console Games
Virtual Surround Stereo for music and multimedia CDs
Did you notice that your games will only come through as 4.1, not 5.1? I don't think it'll make much difference and they will still sound great! I just wondered if you saw that.
GoKu, if you're referring to the mobo in your sig, the Audigy 2 blows that away! You still might want to return the Audigy 2 and get a Hercules or Santa Cruz sound card and pocket the difference.
Ok, I have the speakers. I will tell you how they sound once I get a little mileage out of 'em. But in the meantime, a couple of other questions please if you don't mind?
Whats the difference between Optical and Coaxial connection? I can use one or the other but not both. They are both "one wire/digital" inputs to/fro the motherboard. I can use the coaxial connection now, but in order to use the optical, I have to find a riser card or something. (no, it's not in the box)
The speakers are 5.1. I guess the "yamaha write up" on the page was "old" or something. Because BF1942 definetly uses the center channel speaker. Tribes2, however, doesn't. So I guess if the game supports 5.1 then it knows it? Anyone else know of any games that either use 5.1 and/or dobly digital?? I am itching to try this puppy out!!!
Now I miss my DVD Rom. I would love to hear a DvD movie on this computer now. I should have never taken it out and tossed it.

UT2003 uses Dolby Digital, so the box says
The DvD drive would not read my "I own the original" Copied CDs for whatever reason.
Looks like I have to give UT2003 the once-over. Anything else off the top of your head(s)?

May I add a few things here...
Speakers are always a personal choice, but heres some tips: look at the RMS before the peak wattage; the more you spend the higher quality you get; try before you buy; make sure the subwoofer is at least 50 watts and most of all, crank the volume up while in the store to see if they distort.
Remember... a good speaker set is nothing without a comparable soundcard.
Also I'd like to add that the Z660's mids sound inaccurate compared to the Klipsch Promedia 5.1 and the bass is overwhelming, the bass is also distorted at high volumes.

if the game supports multipositional sound through directsound then it will work through 5.1 speakers. i have set my alc650 with optical out to my home theater system... grand theft auto 3 was coming out all 5.1 speakers and you could definately hear stuff only in the rear speakers at the correct times (in my large living room you can tell, they are mounted in the back on the ceiling)
you do not necessarily have to have dolby digital to have 5.1 sound. dolby digital is a sound format, like MP3 or OGG. DirectSound and A3D however are direct streams so you get all 5.1 channels without any encoding or decoding, its straight from the sound card/sound chip.
