auburn area... missing the days we played sof.....or what game waz it ?? lol...i got sposors and need to find the place but looking for network expertise...What is needed to support 30-40 people lan ?
Hey Catman25!
I hosted a few lan parties, but not for 5 years now... High speed and big monitors makes it easy for most peeps to stay and play at home.
The really old site (Don't expect much... I'm no web page designer

)
http://users.eastlink.ca/~nbond/FragFest/Page.htmlThe most we ever had was 20... and power was the issue that day as we cooked an extension cord...
(Don't use extension cords...)You'll need a couple of
DECENT 24 port switches, and by decent I mean if you can borrow a pair of SMC's, 3Com's, HP's or Cisco's you'll not have any problems... The problems arise when you get a bunch of 16 port DLinks all hooked together... The "HOME" switches ($250 variety) are exactly that home switches, they'll let you down as any lan party turns into an ISO / Giga pr0n swap session at some point... You'll have some folks wanting to play and the other half sucking up all the bandwidth ganking ISO's and looking through buddies well sorted and indexed pr0n collection... (There is atleast one at every LAN

)
The comercial switches handle the "Switching" without a hitch... the cheapies get saturated.
With 40 peeps you'll need to inquire about the power feed, If you holding it in a proper venue, power should suffice, just spread the powebars around... lot's O power bars...

A box of CAT5, some ends and a crimp tool are handy to have as well since patch cords do go bad, you can pinch out a quick patch cord in seconds if you have the supplies on hand. We always had a few spare ether cards on hand as well... Realtek's are less than $10 and work fine.
Headphones are MANDATORY for everyone... Gets real ugly with everyone having speakers...
Virus's can work real havoc with switches today, we see it in the shop at times, someone plugs in a box that hasn't been scanned and all the lights on the switch start to flash rapidly... Others can't go anywhere, local servers can't be seen etc... So be prepeared to unhook someone till they clean thier machine. Yes there are folks out there who run with no virus protection, or it expired or just stopped working... (That's Wierd

)
Lastly you'll need a couple of FAST servers to host your games on and provide DHCP to the peeps. Lock these servers down, otherwise there will be geeks nosing through the works... Nothing worse than a good competition going and some clown shuts it all down working his remote management skillz on your server...
Have a plan to the days events and stick to it, at my LAN we had a no substance policy... Your drunk or stoned keep moving... Too much expensive gear for someone to stumble into...
We also had a "You brought the guy, YOU look after him" in effect as well... Too many times I spent fixing up some bozo's windows, networking, etc... If your coming to the event prepare you computer...
All in all it's alot of work but one hell of a good time. I dont know if this helps you out any, or how much of it you already know... This has been my experience and it was a great one.
I hope it's the same great experience for you and post your event up on
