Friend handed me a USB Flash Drive yesterday...says she can no longer pull data from it...

i plug it into her laptop, and it wont even recognize it...in fact, the computer acts as if it is not even there...

so i bring it home...

plug it into the desktop...tada...there it is...my computer sees it...

then 5 min later...windows pops up an AUTO PLAY box...and then i loose the flash drive window, and the autoplay window...

now, i cannot get the flash drive to work again on the desktop...

scanned my computer for virii right after that happened...nothing...its clean?

this flash drive is only 3 months old...Centrios...it is 256MB in size...and uses USB 1.1 transfer rates...

Ask your friend if they were disconnecting it through the OS instead of just unplugging it. They can burn out the mem if they never use Windows device discontion wizard.

Not really. you will have to restart win98se,me and W2k before the usb port will be free to use again, with XP it shouldn't matter, But if you pull it out before the write is finish there is a good chance of scrambling the data on any system.
I 'll bet it's a physical connection problem (bad solder joint, bent pin, cheap circuit board, lint/dirt/moisture across to pins) with the drive.

Tip for her for the future... Do NOT buy stuff that has Centrios / Nexxtech or anything else that has a Radio Shack / "The Source" branding on it...

The stick's toast, take it back and go somewhere else for a nice Brand Name Jumpdrive etc...
