Full Version: Broken s1mp3 hardware component

I have what I believe is an s1mp3 standard type MP3 player, capacity: 256 MB.

I opened the MP3 player to find out the Board ID, which s1mp3.org says is critical to upgrade the firmware (because I believed my MP3 players problem to be software related). When I opened the MP3 player a small metal cylinder in a black plastic coating fell out. The black plastic coating appears to have three characters written on it. The first character on the coating is not clearly written, it may say "S", "5" or "3". The second and third characters are either O's or zeros. I believe I could solder the component back on to its connections, but for the life of me I can't find where it broke off of. I'm including an image of the interior of the player hoping someone will know what the component is and have an idea of where it is supposed to go. The cylinder itself is app. 6 millimeters long, app. 1.5 millimeters in diameter, with two connections coming out of the end of it.

In addition to finding out that the hardware is broken, I haven't been able to confirm what the Board ID is. U-MP3-A 2004 04 07 is written on one of the chips, but after searching the net I haven't been able to find any confirmation of that being an s1mp3 Board ID.

I would greatly appreciate any information that may answer the questions below:
1. What is the broken part?
2. Where does it go?
3. What is the Board ID?

P.S. As you may notice from the picture, the headphone jack is not there. That is because its soldering connections have broken. Something else I'll need to fix.

The broken part looks like a quartz crystal. It's used to regulate the clocks of the CPU.

Where does it go? Ask on http://forum.s1mp3.org/ !

What is the board ID? Ask on http://forum.s1mp3.org/ !

Good luck, and next time don't open something up if you don't know how (btw, you can find a dissasembly/reassembly guide too on s1mp3.org .

Th3_uN1Qu3, I've had the broken MP3 Player for some time without trying to do anything to it. The only reason I took it apart was because of a guide that I read on s1mp3.org (http://www.s1mp3.org/en/docs_deadrec.php#top).

Eh, seems like s1mp3.org has some problems with their server. Keep trying.

Next time just be a little more careful when taking stuff apart.
