Tell me why my computer is starting up all by its self. It is kinda scarring me that when I am watching TV or out that my computer will just start by its self. I asked a friend of mine about this and he said that it has happened to him too. I wonder if it is my BIOS or power supply. I first thought it might be my cable company, since I have a cable modem they are starting my computer by "wake up on LAN/ring" but I cheeked that and it was disabled. So peeps blow me away with your totally obvious answer.
Thanks icon_question.gif

Wake on LAN is the only thing I can possibly think would cause this unless your comp is possessed icon_eek.gif

is it an a Award Bios?

They have a function to turn on the computer at regular intervals...i believe it can be set from clock time...or even from shutdown point...

You say that WOL is disabled. Do you have the cable from your net card
pluged in to your WOL plug on your mobo, because if its not WOL then it has to be some setting in the power section of your bios.

I checked what you guys said and there are no settings enabled that would power up my computer other than lpt&com (printer&serial) or IRQ (interrupt Request). I have nothing connected to my printer or serial so that cant be it. I did not want to mess with my IRQ because there is nothing there that would suggest it starting by its self.

Thanks for the info guys. I will wait to see if it happens again i will get back to you.

I am not sure if this would help but...

My dad has an antec case with a 350w enermax psu in it. If he turns off the computer normally and turns the switch off on the power strip, everything shuts off (monitor, printer, etc.) But when he goes to turn on the power strip, the power of the computer cuts on for a few seconds and then shuts off. WEIRD!! So I told him to leave the powerstrip on and turn things off manually. Just a thought.

Does it seem to happen along with soething else. IE when you turn on your microwave or when your mobile phone rings?

no
Mr Magoo
does it turn of when you run the bath?

Are there any power glitches when it happens? Even without glitches, if the power line was 'dirty', maybe it could affect your power supply. Of course that would seem to indicate your supply is defective. You might want to try swapping in a new supply, if you can.

it could be KaZaA

you might want to download your latest BIOS version and flash it. LAN soft start is commonly a feature that comes enabled from the factory. there are some other hardware stats progs out there that may be able to help you, as far as diagnosing what else has access to your ON/OFF functions. check security sections in download sites such as cnet's www.download.com
i can't remember which ones will do it, but just have a read of what's out there - there's a heap of potentially helpful stuff!!

have you tried leaving your network cable out and seeing if it does it then?
just to test if WOL is active. icon_cool.gif
