Hello all ... a long time ago I installed a second version of Windows XP on my computer. If memory serves, I installed it on the same directory as my original operating system. I uninstalled it shortly thereafter ... however, every time I boot up, the computer asks me which copy of XP I want to use. This despite the fact that I have since totally reinstalled windows and even replaced the physical hard drive! How can I get it to sop asking for an operating system that no longer exists?
Currently I a running XP Pro on an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with 2 Gigs of RAM and 750 Gigs on 3 hard drives.
Many Thanks!! icon_rolleyes.gif

You may may have a ghost computer that does not wish to die; i.e., after it lost it's hard-drive-worth a lot of money would suspect this machine-perhaps, Ghost-busters Inc. Am sure some one here can answer this question. Good luck to you. icon_smile.gif

You would be surpised to see where Windows hides bits of data. Once intsalled I find nothing but a complete fdisk and reformat wipes all the previous data.

The info is contained in the boot.ini file in the root diretory. You have to edit it and take out the wrong entry. CAUTION: Make sure you read the default boot info carefully so as not to remove that.

goto start/run/type in: MSconfig ...A small box will pop up

Then goto BOOT.INI tab

There is a button in the middle named: Check all boot paths

Should fix it if you uninstalled the other OS

Next time you install a OS...format the disk completely

hit apply and ok..

Restart now... once you restart there will be a small pop up box... (just a warning)...

You installed operating system two times in the same directory. It means directory contains two entries of the same operating system. It makes problem unless you will not delete one entry. First of all you need to delete both of entries, reinstall Windows XP and restart your computer. It may be solving your problem.
