and yet so far. icon_cry.gif

After waiting 1 1/2 years to get a shot at broadband, I got my dsl modem via UPS today. My telco says that all is setup at the CO and I got my modem hooked up. NOTHING!!

I am running XP pro and an ESC K7S5A w/ onboard LAN. I can't remember the name of the modem, i will add later. I setup the TCP/IP info as given to me by my ISP. Including the IP addy, Subnet mask, Default gateway and primary and alternate DNS. I am also running ZAP, and have tried with and without it.

The network connection says it is connected. I get power LED, CPU LED, network LED flashes but, the transfer LED does nothing. I get zilch when i try to connected with IE. I get 100% loss packets when i try to ping.

I am trying to get guidance from my ISP, but they are smaller and seem to be kinda new with this (as you know, i am in BFE). Any advice or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
odie
Can you clarify the Network LED... is this your ethernet connection on the modem or the phone line connection on the modem (DSL/TRANSFER LED)?

If its the last one then its not working at the central office. If its the other one then it has something to do with the NIC or the config. of it.
bull
Couldn't remember the exact names. icon_redface.gif

It is the last one, so problem at the CO??

Also, could this be me not getting a signal because I am to far from the CO? Anyone who answers yes to that will make me cry. icon_cry.gif
odie
bro, if they tested for it and said it was OK... then you should be getting a signal.

Also, you wouldn't just cut out, you would have speed degradation only the farther away the slower the speed. At least thats what "they" told me here... icon_rolleyes.gif

But if its the DSL/TRANSFER LED then its with the telco not your comp. or your phone jack... icon_eek.gif
bull
I don't think they tested crap. They went with the "it should work" theory. icon_rolleyes.gif

I shouldn't be the jack, as it plugs in and does the dial-up thing just fine.

Hope to get some headway today. icon_confused.gif

Well... good luck... I hope it works for you. And besides, I want YOU to send me CD's LOL!!! j/k...

Damn telco's always going on assumptions.. icon_confused.gif
Jason
you had to setup TCP-IP info ? On mine I had to do nothing.

It isn't still trying to use your dial up connection is it ?
bull
They sent me the IP addy, the gateway and the works. Their instructions were it enter all of the info. icon_confused.gif

I don't even need a Username and Password, just plug in the modem and done.
odie
Sounds like cable internet here in Canada... input nothing.. plug and go.
MadCow
Its trying to tell you you should not switch from a superior connection....

Dialup is to Cable (or DSL) that an LP is to a CD....

Bull!!! Hey dude, I am assuming you are using a Router? If so, don't. Get it working direct with your PC first. Then set up the Router.

please post their instructions. we can help go through them point by point. I will call you personally and walk through it with you if you want, you have my email rignt? Not my spam hotmail either.

Let me know ya big bully.... icon_lol.gif We will get it sorted out.
vegetto34
he has PPPoE then like me.

listen up man. first thing to do. call the telephone company. tell them to check their router on THEIR END and make sure it is partitoned correctly. it might be on PPPoA instead of PPPoE. then pick up this driver, and login. same thing happened to me. they had the router on PPPoA, but the lights came on and it seemed like it was going to work... but didn't. they changed it to PPPoE and i was on the internet. http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/

Thanks veg, still waiting for the network admin to call me back. icon_evil.gif

I will ask about that for sure.

Manny, here are the instructions:

DSL Settings

WINS will supply you with the following settings that will need to be setup in your computer. An Ethernet card needs to be present and working in your machine for DSL to work properly.

1. Static IP Address
2. SubNetMask IP Address
3. Gateway IP Address
4. DNS IP addresses

WINME/XP

-Click on Start / Control Panel
-Double click on the Network Icon
-Scroll down through to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
-Click once and click properties
-Click Use the following IP Address
-Enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway addresses
-Click Use the following DNS Server
-Enter the primary DNS for the preferred, Secondary DNS for the Alternate
-Click OK until you are back to the desktop
-Your machine may need to reboot to save and load settings

That is it. icon_cry.gif
Jason
Ping the default gateway see if you get a responce.

So you are not getting a reponce from their router then, are you sure the address is correct ?

Double, tripple check the address's.
ldonyo
Just for funsies, Bull, what IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Addresses did they give you?

You didn't, by chance, get one of them in the wrong place, did you (i.e. DNS in where Gateway should be)? I'm not saying you did, but you might want to check, just to be sure.

Also, have you verified the different IP addresses and the subnet mask with the ISP? Maybe they goofed up and gave you the wrong IP. icon_eek.gif

One last thing, they do have your account provisioned on their end already, right? When I first got Road Runner I went round and round trying to figure out why I couldn't connect to the Internet. Then I called them and when I finally spoke to someone that knew his posterior from and earthen orifice I found out that they hadn't finished setting my account up on their side. icon_mad.gif
bull
OK, they are not using PPPoe at all, they use a straight ethernet connection. The network admin thinks that it is something on their end, yes he actually admitted that.

ldon, I have checked and rechecked the numbers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and entered and reentered. icon_smile.gif

They are gonna work on it tomorrow and let me know. Everyone cross your fingers and pray for me to whomever you pray too. icon_lol.gif
