I need a program...perferably free that will burn onto dvds....
anyone have any suggestions?

Um...not everything burns to DVD. Something just burn to SVCD or VCD. They will still work in in dvd players.

What is the format?

Look on Google to search a best free program that will burn onto dvds. There are many programs available online. Choose a best one according to your requirements.
