I find it interesting that one of the main reasons that people bought AMD over P4s in the past (price difference) seems to no longer be the case.
Newegg
XP 3000 $593
P4 3gig $564
Its kinda a catch 22 for poor AMD. We all know that they needed to bring their prices up to boost their poor profit margine of the past, but at the same time their gonna lose that bang-for-the-buck edge theyve had in the past.
And quite frankly, a P4 3 gig on a 533 bus with 1066 rram is a faster setup than a compairable XP 3000 rig.

Soon P4 3.2 ghz with 1meg cache, 800 FSB, Dual Channel DDR, Prescott New Instructions (PNI), 0.9 Micron, better Hyperthreading.
I now officially prefer the Pentium 4

I tend to agree, for right now it looks like the P4 offers a little more bang for the buck.

TRAITOR!!!
Hopping on the Intel bandwagon seems like a good idea, but in good time you are gonna hit some bumps in the road and fly off

how does the prices stack up with cpu, mobo, ram?
the barebone system prices are quite relevant. if you want ppl to convert, they'd like the whole picture.

If you stop and think about it there never was to much of a price difference.
With AMD we have to buy exotic coolers and fans, not so with Intell.

You don't have to buy exotic coolers for Athlon XPs if you're not overclocking, you can use the retail cooler without any trouble. I would put at least three case fans in any rig I build, and probably more, no matter what platform I'm using. The airflow is for the benefit of every component in the box, not just the CPU.
As for price points, once you go over $150, I'm not paying much attention because I can't afford to get it anyway.

Exotic coolers do look cool though. Espically the fans with the LED's behind the blades

I don't think AMD are going to release their newest flagship cpu at a rock bottom price, you can't expect them to. Up to the 2100+, AMD is better bang for buck but after that, you are better off going to an intel rig.
But then the thing that starts to bite into the wallet is the added price of an intel based motherboard, regardless of chipset manufacturer.

SiS, Asus, and Samsung are developing the "quad-channel" rdram chipset (did i post that here? i dont remember) which will support the 800mhz bus, since intel isn't making future rdram chipsets. i can still use the pc-1066 i'm using now except at 9.6gigs/sec :P
