Ford City Mourns Student Killed In Crash
MANOR TWP. (KDKA) ― The Ford City community is in mourning after a high school junior was killed in a car accident while driving to school.
Shawna Petrosky, 17, died after State police say she pulled in front of a truck carrying steel coils at the intersection of Main Street (Route 66) and Pleasantview Drive.
Investigators say a 41,000-pound coil broke loose and crushed her Cavalier.
Her brother Eric, and cousin, Greg Heeter, both 14, were injured and taken to Children's Hospital. The driver of the rig, Sam Libengood, 44, of Saltsburg, was also hurt.
This evening, students left flowers, stuffed animals and pictures at a makeshift roadside memorial near the crash scene.
Rob Hockenberry, a friend of Shawna, was supposed to get ice cream with her tonight.
"If you needed help with homework or something she would always help you with it. She would walk with you and stuff like that and it's a shame that it happened to her," he said.
Police say traffic lights at the intersection were still blinking red and yellow at 7:20 a.m. when the accident happened.
They're supposed to be operating normally at 6:30 a.m., but they apparently weren't updated for Daylight Saving Time.
