Ford City Mourns Student Killed In Crash
MANOR TWP. (KDKA) ― The Ford City community is in mourning after a high school junior was killed in a car accident while driving to school.

Shawna Petrosky, 17, died after State police say she pulled in front of a truck carrying steel coils at the intersection of Main Street (Route 66) and Pleasantview Drive.

Investigators say a 41,000-pound coil broke loose and crushed her Cavalier.

Her brother Eric, and cousin, Greg Heeter, both 14, were injured and taken to Children's Hospital. The driver of the rig, Sam Libengood, 44, of Saltsburg, was also hurt.

This evening, students left flowers, stuffed animals and pictures at a makeshift roadside memorial near the crash scene.

Rob Hockenberry, a friend of Shawna, was supposed to get ice cream with her tonight.

"If you needed help with homework or something she would always help you with it. She would walk with you and stuff like that and it's a shame that it happened to her," he said.

Police say traffic lights at the intersection were still blinking red and yellow at 7:20 a.m. when the accident happened.

They're supposed to be operating normally at 6:30 a.m., but they apparently weren't updated for Daylight Saving Time.

What a terrible thing to happen to kids. A real shame and a terrible loss for her family, relatives and friends.

Really sad story, it's such a tough thing to learn, all the safe driving rules. And young people don't have the experience to deal with every situation that can arise. As a parent my heart goes out to the families of everyone involved.

I went through this intersection no more than 15 minutes before the wreck. It's just a terrible thing to happen to anyone, and the fact that it happened to a kid makes it just that much worse. I'm only 18, but this whole thing really puts my life into perspective. Shows that any second it could all go down the tubes & this could not only happen to me but to anybody.

Always sad when kids are involved. It must have been quite traumatic for you too Greg having been there. Prayers to the families and hope you can "get over" the experience, because there will be no forgetting.

You know what I really hate about things like that. People can be complete idiots about it. Here's a nice fat for-instance, my friend Dane got one of those chain letters in the form of a txt message today & it led us to wonder, if I send this to 10 people on my contacts list, what will that really do to help her grieving family? Some people are just so stupid.
