Sadly we have lost another horse in an important race. Soon after she hit the finish line, Eight Belles collapsed with two front broken ankles.
Due to the severity of the injuries and the great amount of pain she would be suffering, it was decided to euthanize her on the spot.
What a sad loss.
I don't know about anyone else but to me this borders on the unacceptable.
I wonder if anyone has traced how many horses (and dogs) have died as a result of injuries suffered in races.

Sadly, this is the current state of the gaming mentality for many. Check out the brutal treatment involved with used up Greyhounds at the end of a racing career. Some sports people do take care of their dogs-others eat their 'friends', or worse. Should definitely review these 'sports,' and the efficacy of continuing on a practice that seemingly becomes more barbaric as we advance in time?

I applaud the efforts of those that adopt retired greyhounds, racehorses and work animals of all types. Bless them.

Agree with your thoughts t_b. Actually, have several people about here that have and nursed back to health these gentle Greyhounds ... would have some myself-need a farm! Land this way is really none existent, and the zoning laws are unfortunately at times, quite restrictive. Yes, would like to see some of the laws on the books enforced in terms of animal cruelty .... would not mind seeing some of these bucket butts race about the track a bit-good for weight control, and perhaps a little awareness shaping?

A guy who goes to the same dog park as me adopts retired greyhounds. They really are great dogs!

Df - great idea. Have the lard arses run the track and the dogs watch and speculate on the results. Beautiful.
Snuffy - great work by your friend/buddy. Support his efforts if you can with time, money or both. Thanks to you both for sharing your thoughts/ideas.
