I saw something similar on t.v. a while ago. We are supposed to be overdue for a magnetic pole reversal.

Hmmm, perhaps, a resolution of the proble? A state of the art ship fixed with a large laser cutter nose, diving deep into the earth crust heading to the center! The burning issue would be to stabilize the irregular core with several colossal hydrogen bombs, each going off in sequence-food for crew can be had on the way, by eating all the strange creatures encountered-toasting on the walls of the heated cavern.
