Getting ready to hook BB to other machines in house.
I know I need a router and cat 5, but I dont just want to share internet, I want to be networked as to play games, share files, etc. Do I need additional hardware, or will I be networked with just the router/BB connection. In other words can I setup my printer, file sharing through this connection.
I need links, advice or whatever in how to proceed.
Machine 1.XPpro
2. 98se
3. 95 b (can change to 98se if need be)
Done lots of reading on networking, but have no hands on experience

NAT connection sharing- takes the inet requests on one computer - routes all winsock connections to another computer basicly. No extra hardware needed- just a pc with an extra network card. works for games, msn, etc.

get a dedicated switch...forget the router bit...

your isp, like many cable companies gives you 3 IP's. Thus , each computer can have its own "ip", without the need to set up internal ips, and externals with a router. Phone your isp first, and get the scoop. Grab some cable, and get down to business.

I recommend the switch/router like LinkSys or Addtron... extremely easy to set up and configure. Let the router do the work for you and dhcp out the IP's to the boxes.

You may have to do a little port forwarding or put you machine in the DMZ if you want to host an internet game.

Sid I believe your right about my cable company allowing me three isps.
I will call.

i have found wingate to be quite insecure unless setup corectly, which most people dont remember to do. Anyway to anwser the main post.

i assume you have working network cards for them all a switch and a comp with the modem plugged into. There are multiple possibilities. You can as someon has suggested for you to get a full hardware router etc which the modem plugs into or you can turn one machine into one (which is the cheaper way) prolly your best option is to get sygate home networking or to simply use 98se's ICS which altho dodgy at times does work quite well. Its up to you however. If you use sygate you will have more control and also be able to get more stuff working, and in the office version it offers a firewall, which is also good for broadband users. god knows how many trojans are stopped getting in and getting out.

Works great on my server running 98se, heh. Up 24/7! Runs Warcraft 3 beta if I have my server on it and I'm not on crappy Battle.net... ick.
