that honda civic electric hybrid is awefull sweet, but I need a flexible interior that is goof-proof because of the kid and hauling lots of bulky stuff.
The Honda Element is number one in my book.. and it drives VERY well, took one for a long test drive because when I get back to work, we are going to need a second vehicle, and we need room and versatiltiy
My main concern is Quality and Price. I HATE american cars and trucks... because of horrible build quality. Are you going to pay top dollar for a car/truck/suv that rattles and makes horrible noises over mildly deformed pavement when you can have a quiet comfortable ride for the same or less money? Do you want a vehicle that likes to be maintained a lot or one that hardly EVER needs anyting but oil changes and fuel?
look at the reliability ratings of you favorite vehicles at places like Consumer Reports.... Let's see, Toyota and Honda are always right there at the top.
I am not shelling out my hard earned cash for poor qualtiy vehicles... unless I work for the big 3 directly and get huge discounts to do so.... it just makes no financial sense.
If GM/Ford/Chrysler pays my college tutition and my salary, then I will buy their products... but, last time I checked, they never contributed to my salary of benefits for many years now... no, they are more interested in building cars and trucks in China.

it's been proven over and over in tests. not only are they the most reliable cars you can ever get for your money, cars from the east are also some of the worlds safest cars to drive around in. the only competitors are the germans with their mercedes and porsche, which quite frankly are a little pricey for the ordinary man.
brands like toyota even make great scores on the used marked, which is why i'm aiming for a mid-nighties corolla myself. have droven an older version till now, but can't get any more ladies with this one

and coz, this car appeals to younger peeps who are on the go... not sports car freaks.
it is not about going fast, but going places.... comfortably and with lots of your stuff.
lets see you pile your camping equipment and tow 1500 pounds with that sports car....... its all about what you want in a vehicle. You like sports cars, I like utility I can afford.
I took that quote above from here
http://www.forbes.com/2003/01/06/cx_mf_0106test.html
QUOTE
See, this vehicle was literally designed and sweated over by the target market--active, suburban twentysomethings. Honda surveyed hundreds of college-age folks and asked what they wanted in a car/SUV and even had them submit drawings and ideas. The Element is what they wanted, right down to the funky shape.
These are kids who like to cruise in their vehicles, who like to eat (and even sleep) in their vehicles and who live in their cars. For them, it's not about going fast; it's about going places. And it's about spending lots and lots of time inside the car. (And if you're inside the car, you can't see the outside.) Moreover, a generation weaned on SUVs hardly cares about boxy. If your parents drive a minivan and a pickup, you don't worry about swoopy lines. You might want the same kind of utility your parents' car offers--you just don't want to look like you're driving your parents' car.
Our own informal survey of reactions to the Element was absolutely polarizing.

look peeps, I just LOVE this car.... I don't care who buys one! i am NOT selling them... OK?
Just that, I actually like it.... and with a messy wife and 3 yr old who like to eat in the car and camp, well, I like it a LOT.
Notice how you can hang the rear seats along the insides of the car? Also notice the Rubber floor (No more floor mats!).. Dent resistant body panels.... and the waterproof stain resistant seats! all starting at 16,100 USD...
the EX model I had quoted is 19,400 and that is a super bargain from what I have been looking at... believe me, I loaded it up!
that is the stuff that really gets my attention, not the homely outside... although, I find the looks very pleasing while many dont like them.
Form follows function, and function is beauty to me.

I don't care if the friggin car will haul my wife, 3 kids and a horse in it. It's still fugly!
That honda Element is definetly a case of "function follows form", although they could have "prettied" it up a little. Jessh. It looks like a cross between a toaster/refrigerator and one of those pug dogs. Ya know, the stupid looking dogs that look like they ran full speed into a wall and caused it's face to become all smashed in?
I can think of a few cars that are similar to your Element but, actually look nice;
* The PT Cruiser can carry almost as many people as your Honda Element, has as many folding seats, etc, etc, and still looks decent.
* The HUMVEE - 'nough said
* Jeep Liberty
To each his own, if you like the looks of the car, then get yourself to a eye doctor.

Seriously, I just can't see, from any angle, how the look of that car is
attractive.
Mandark
Apr 7 2003, 11:35 AM
the pt cruiser is a neon chassis.... chrysler products.... I am wary of them....
the liberty is way too expensive and gets horrid gas mileage, but I am considering it if they give me a 0% 60 month deal
they do appear to be well built as well and i do appreciate the full time 4WD of the Jeep.
Bottom line is Quality followed very closely by MONEY. The Element is far more configurable than the Jeep as well, but, like I said, if they give me a better deal at a lower price, I'll take it.
nfinitefx_
Apr 7 2003, 04:23 PM
I agree the Element is not a very good looking vehicle.
However it is not designed for top performance, it's aimed at people who are into going places a lot and taking a lot of stuff with them. I wish they could have made it look a little nicer though.
As far as, "high speed reckless fun and AWESOME crashes", goes, I really wouldn't do any street racing. "Fast and Furious" street racer types have ruined the whole image of racing.
RACING ON THE OPEN STREETS IS ILLEGAL.
not only is it illegal,
IT'S DANGEROUS.
Real racers will take it to the track, ricers take it to the mall parking lot and sit.

As far as chrysler vs Honda, well take it from an old wrench..... if you go to a chrysler dealer and look at their warrenty shelves youll see that there full, Honda dealer youll see damn few parts waiting to go back to warranty. Bottom line- Honda makes a far superior product. Just bought my 2nd one for my daughter.
PS- Owned a chrysler mini van, last american car Ill own. What a piece of shit, was constantly working on it.

A-MEN Again BigO, my american cars were always too busy rattling off all their parts. The last one I had nickle and dimed me 200 bucks a crack for the last 4 years.... when it was 5 yrs old, it cost me 2000 in repairs, and kept 200'ing me to death.

No matter what brand, people who drive sensibly and do regular maintenance on their cars will get good use from it, problem is that the lemons are a lot more common in American made cars, When you pay a guy 20 to 30 dallars an hour with no skills to bolt on the same part all day its hard to make a car thats put together well and is still affordable..... did I say Ford.... Im gonna puke.

As far as chrysler/plymouth...
I hate them.
My grandpa used to have a 91 Sundance, crappiest thing ever. Hardly any pickup when you gave it some gas. Worst yet, it blew a head gasket at only 60,000 miles. 60,000.....
My 95 Nissan Altima has 166,000 miles on it and has not blown 1 head gasket. Mind you after I wrecked it, this is to be expected after a wreck, I had to get a new oil pump. After running into someone at 55 though, and totaling their Buick, you would expect a lot more

the Mercury Villager is really a Nissan..... re-branded.
Pappy, I had an '88 Mercury Tracer (Mazda 323) and put over 300,000 miles on it.... only replaced consumables like brakes, tires, oil... never an engine or transmission problem and NO interior noise either... no rattles and squeaks.... not that's a car!
I did have to replace the booster pump for the brakes... and that got expensive cause they had to drop out the engine... which only ever used Mobile One Synth oil and the trannie only had Mobil One Synth trannie fluid, which I had them replace when I bought it.

Ok, I will be the first to admit the ChryCo "K" Cars from the 80s to the early 90s were horse-crap!
Now, with Mercedes Benz acquiring ChryCo, take a look again.
It really is a different car company. Whew, I am starting to sound like Manny.

HumbleO, I don't think there is a US car manufacturer out now that can keep up w/ ChryCo. They are designing, implementing and producing some wonderful cars. From the Chrysler Pacifica, Chrysler Crossfire, Dodge SRT-4, Dodge Hemi pickups, I can go on and on.
Gone are the days of poor quality, shoddy engineering and poor customer support. I have been and always will be a Chrysler fan-atic.
Even when they were producing crap cars like the Sundance / Omni / Verizon, they had a few "sleepers" in the stable. Such as the Shelby Omni GLHS, Shelby Daytona TurboZ, the first pickup truck that was a convertible, etc.etc.
Ok, no more ranting. Or, would the more appropriate comment be:
no more manny-ing
