anyone got any recommendations? i need a quiet/silent heatsink that will chill a XP 1700+ pretty good. I plan on overclocking more (currently at 1.7ghz with a Volcano 5@ 63 deg under load). also keep it cheap

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend ANY silent heatsink for use in serious overclocking. If you were running at stock speed, or not too much over, I'd suggest the Zalman Flower, along with a bracket-mounted 92mm fan.

63C now, and you wanna run it silent?! Be prepared for total meltdown.
If you could keep it under 50C that would be a good start. Maybe you should look into watercooling if you want to get it silent.

I don't think lapping a crappy aluminum heatsink is going to help much. I would suggest trying a decent copper heatsink, after lapping it, of course.
The Thermalright SLK 600 or 800 would be good choices and you can decide how deaf you want to be by picking damn near any fan you want to use with them, too.

Lapping a cheap aluminum heatsink would make it work better than an unlapped aluminum heat sink. Aluminum will never reach the performance of copper though as aluminum has 1/2 the thermal conduction propertys of copper. Copper will conduct .99 calorie per sec per sq centimeter aluminum will only conduct .5. Considering the cost of a good copper heatsink compared to a 1700 processor it would be a good investment

aluminum with embedded copper works great too.. look at the Alpha PAL 8045U like mine.... works fantastic.
you want silent, you are gonna need a koolance case with the cpu water block.

My current HS is alu, and it does an ok job, but I need something that works better. I would really like the one heatsink on Xoxide, the one that has a heat pipe.
edit: here it is.
