Had some good links on it but can find em now.
Dont say disable it all together, some of my programs refuse to run when its disabled.

Never switch it off, personally I would defrag Hard disk then set min and max to a gig and put on a different drive to the OS if possible.

Or go by Mandarks answer which is sensible.

Fix the min and max size to whatever it recommends. Fixing the size ensures that the disk won't fragment as the pagefile.sys grows.

if you have more than one hard drive on separate IDE channels create one on the separate disk(s)

that is very important. if one ide channel is busy and it needs to cache out to the disk, it will automatically use the free channel.

defrag the piss out of your drives. reboot with BlueCon boot cd and delete the pagefile.sys files on your drives. reboot windows xp. when it reboots it will re-create the pagefile.sys files in the clear and unfragmented file area of the disk.

I have two hi perf drives each on their own ATA/100 channel. I have identical sized pagefile.sys files on each... and both are contiguous (not fragmented)... i notice a huge increase in performance.

and listen to Jason, NEVER disable it.... EVER

DO NOT put a the pagefile.sys in a RAID 5
