I setup a computer for a friend and all is working great except the sound.

Here is the setup: MSI 6340 mobo w/ Duron 1.3

They are running 98. I got the drivers for MSI's site and installed them, but when i install i get a message (working from my poor memory): "Installed program is useless as no wave device is installed" or something along those lines.

The device manager shows no problems, but there is only 2 things listed under the sound devices, the ac97 and the modem sound thing. Getting a sound card is a possibility, but they really need to get up and running like now as he takes a class that the program is not compatible with 2K or XP.

If I try to update the driver through device manager, it asks for the 98 disk. Will this install the needed stuff or not? I have to go there tomorrow afternoon and try to get this running so ANY input is greatly appreciated!!!

yes use the 98 disc and see if that works , it should

make sure that the OnBoard sound is turned on in the BIOS, you should set it to ON, or AUTO...

I am so used to XP now and how it actually installs the things you need. Forgot how much fun installing 98 was and the great search for drivers.

The compatibility mode in WinXP won't work?
