Got myself a D-Link Di-614+ Wireless 4-port Router yesterday and D-Link DWL-520+ Wireless PCI Card.

Both are 2.4GHz with up to 22MB/s.

PCWorld gave the combo 4-1/2 stars and rated it a best buy.

Anyone have good / bad experiences with this combo?

Hard to setup?

I bought a 614+ and it was the worst piece of junk I ever owned.

The 2X 22mbps mode was slower than regular .11b by about 30%. The router would also lock if both wired and wireless devices attached to it. It also refused to issue a DHCP address to a NIC if the nic was moved to a different system even after a hard reset.

Then after 2 months the whole unit died for no apparent reason. I did an RMA with Dlink and the replacement seems a lot better (gave it to my brother). So they probably updated a bunch of things behind the scenes (New PCBs and antennas, etc.).

My friend has a Linksys Wireless Router and Card on his Dell Laptop that is running windows XP.

He has AOL on the laptop and that is the only way he can connect to the Internet. I can not get I.E. to connect to the net.

Any ideas where I should look? I ran the home networking wizard and selected the wireless connection as the default connection. Still don't work... any clue?

I have been using this combo for a while now, and it is not difficult at all to set up or use...

I find that it is as fast as the wired connection we had before, and a lot more secure with the built in security settings...

Coz IE should work.

You have to be logged in on AOL then open up IE to use IE.

Cant just use IE straight? He has a cable modem w/ Broadband....

Home networking wizard is the devil's tool. Its about as useful as the office assistant in M$ Office... i.e.: If you want your network to not work use that wizard.

AOHELL older versions also bollocks up TCP/IP in Windows OS's. Try removing that.

Yes I do agree with you there Fyend.. it is the most useless thing since the Office Assistant.. but for people who are new to networking, it works...

We had AOL for my wife and the only way to use a stand-alone version of IE was to be connected to AOL's network first. Although we were on dialup at the time I doubt it's changed at all. Oh, and just because you uninstall the AOL software does NOT mean the borking of the TCP/IP stack is undone!

Well I got it all setup last weekend and WOW! It kicks ass... no more cable clutter and I find it faster than my old wired Internet Connection, but thats probably just me.

I have only one grip with the whole setup thing... the manual I had sucked ass, and it would help to explain some of the terminology the router uses in its firmware/setup program... other than that it kicks ass.

Cheers.
