ATHEIST...
all my life...
read the bible, new and old, Catholic and Presb. Also the Mormons book as well. Ha, that one was funny...
"Smith got his new religion going by writing a book known as The Book of Mormon. The book was much too dull to make it as a novel -- Mark Twain called the book "chloroform in print" -- so it was marketed as a new bible."

Tell that to Bush with his Religiouss Initiatives to provide tax dollars to openly discriminatory Religious Organizations, and my favorite lines of his, "Jesus is my favorite philosopher" and "God is on our side" when invoking religious talk to get the nation psyched and ready to go to war.
Well, I'm ATHEIST as well ~sid~, and good to have you back I might add.

i believe in myself as a whole, so no. a person has his/her own life to create, without any "higher power" to control it or help influence it. you are born alone, and you will die alone

There is no way we are going to start a religion discussion in here guys.
Everywhere that I have seen a religious discussion people get pissed off and go absolutely insane.
So please, please, please do not bring up the 'what is your religion/beliefs/ect/ect" questions.
It is one of those subjects that is in that list that you just don't talk about.
Sorry guys but Queen is right.
Please PM with your comments/flames.

AMD vs. Intel
thats what its like here...religions are fruiltful...being many of them, all around the world...respect EACH other...you may disagree, but do NOT intentionally HURT someone, because they have different beliefs. That would be like me beating up anyone who uses intel, or ati, or Maxtor....does that sound stupid, yes....so does religion bashing...
anyhow, i started this threadie postie thingie to get to know yous better...there is no denying that religion affects a person, their lifestyle, or way of living...
i just want to know if you've read the bible (not the boble, thats the King Bob version) what religion, do you goto church....i find this fascinating...it is interesting...then at a future time, we can look at the stats that have developed themselves...
this thread was not started to discriminate! it was to find out who YOU are religiously...DO NOT BASH HERE, please, lets all have a serious talk, if you want...Of course there will be people to get frustrated, but this is normal in any LARGE discussion...
views and opinions will be expressed here, no ones views or opinions are better than someone elses...OPINIONS ARE LIKE A-HOLES, EVERYONES GOT 1...
please remember that the people here are your friends, above all, nothing else matters...

dont belive thats it i dont need to explain
I don't believe either. Seen too much weird {expletive} in my chose career field to believe that there would be some higher power allowing people to do this to thier kids, friends, family, neighbors, etc.... It just doesn't make sense to me that if there is some higher power how could he put people on this earth that are capable of such atrocities?? How could someone sit back and allow him/her to pimp out his 10 yr old daughter? How could someone sit back and let someone sodimize his 1.5 yr old son?
It is just beyond comprehension and belief.

I have been knowingly an atheist for about er...3 years when I discovered the possiblity that I didn't have to believe there was anything at all.
I was such a believer in the "god" for so long and then I was like. woa. there is nothing. now what? great there really wasn't a purpose before now there sure as hell isn't one know.
so the big question in life points to be "what is my purpose in life?" the purpose in life is to assist the purpose of what? continuation of the species? trying to make things in life easier for your fellow humans? reaching nirvana?
hell if i know

in the last 5,000 years of written human history we have achieved so much. in the last 50 years we have achieved what like 99% of technological feats? what lies ahead in the next 50.
wow i am just rambling on and on and on.
ok i'm done

nice post Ghandi...
me, i've never believed, i found it odd when i was younger that Santa was not real, the story books i read where not real, so why is the Bible and the text contained in it real?
i have read the bible, and the book of mormon. I have reseached all that i could to prove myself wrong, to search till there was nothing left to analize...
i have studied Greek Mythology, and the changing of religions in the Greek culture, i have read scriptures, and i have talked to many many door to door people...
i believe we are here because we are...
i need nothing to hold on to...
Human nature is what it is, and what it will become, there is no set goal, no set way to live...we do how ever decide to live in a reasonably fashionable society, and we have respect and dignity.
i will not force my "non-belief" on others, as i expect the same from others...but, standing your point is not pushing beliefs on others, and a good debate is always something i look forward too...
Ghandi, live life, and have fun...and have sex...thats the purpose of every species on this earth, to procreate...to ensure that the species lives on...evolution...

Was "Independent" as a kid, transferred to Lutheran <where I was baptised and confirmed, and where I read the entire Bible as well as all the accompanying Lutheran literature>, converted to "Bible" <which is a more conservative form of Baptist>, converted to Catholicism, attended another "Independent"...
And now...one single "God"? No. Multiple gods and goddesses and nature? Yup! I don't have a "religion". If asked to define myself, I usually come up with "Pagan, with a touch of Druidism". But that's not exactly it, either, since I also have a smattering of Eastern beliefs mixed in, and some things I've come up with on my own. I do not follow all the teachings of any one organized religion. I have my own relationship with the gods and goddesses and various spirits that hold sway over the world around me.

Well... interesting to see how many different views and opinions there are as you meet more people with something intelligent to say about the topic. Bravo people - nice to see that this topic can be discussed without flames.
I'm more agnostic than anything, but most definitely against organized religion. Religion was and is a tool of man, therefore it is flawed. But I do believe there is some truth to the writings of the Bible - but it is after all, just a document that's been passed along through the ages. I believe it has given up some of the core meaning through the translation and transcription process. And I also believe that there are way too many people out there interpreting it in too many different ways for it to be of much good to any one individual to take someone elses word for it. That's why I'm against organized religion.
If you want the skinny on what's in the Bible, read it yourself and draw your own conclusions.
I look at it as a guide on how to live your life. But beyond that, I have a healthy stance of 'wait and see.'

Borderline Atheists lack belief in all but one god.

I in part agree with Mister, organized religions interpret the words differently, and it was, as with Coz, (though our beliefs differ) my job that has sustain my believe. I have seen too many miracles to pass it off as luck or chance. But no matter what you believe, that is your business and acceptance of each other is what family and friends are all about. Just one more note, any and all could talk until they are blue in the face, my faith will not change.

I just watched an episode of like 20/20, 60 minutes, or something like that a few months ago...or perhaps it was an article I read a few months ago. But either way that was what it was about. People turning away from the churches and combining the parts of various beliefs/religions that they liked and just practicing on their own.
I think one peson was a practicing Anyrans(mispelled bad) Buddhist yet read the bible everynight before bed. The two worked for him because he felt that the Chrisitian bible was correct but the Buddhist rituals gave him the peace of mind that allowed him to be a successful executive. Good story I'll have to find it....

I think this is a great thing that's happening. By not be so attached to religious institutions and practicing their faith on their own, people are less likely to pass down religion and religious conformity to their offspring in such a disciplined and forceful way, which in turn will lead to more people examining their beliefs and probably more atheists and agnostics.

It took alot of thougt for me before i answered this thread. I am an athiest, I have no belief in any type or form of religion or any kind of afterlife. I have read most of the bible along with works by other religions. I have also read historic and scientific accounts of happenings that have been claimed as devine. What i believe is that this life we are living is all there is. Heaven or hell? How do you live your life, if you are satisfied with your life happy with friends, family and aquaintenses you are living in your own heaven. Are you a scum preying on others critical and complaining you are in your own hell. You make your own bed as they say, don't blame your problems on others.
If I identifyed with any religion it would be Mohammedism. Mohammed said I am only a man but here are some rules to live by, seemed pretty logical in my book
My sister is a borne again christian that condems my drinking. I asked her about the references of drinking in the bible. She claims that the references to drinking in the bible refer to drinking grape juice. I asked her if the intellegent men that recorded the bible stories (the upper crust of their day) would know the difference between wine and grape juice. Seems that is lost on the new generation of scolars.
Bottom line is what comforts you? Christian, Jew, Mohammed or other its your thing don't let anybody sway you from what you believe.

I don't follow any organized religion. In fact, I don't think much of any organized religion at all, but that's another subject.
I have read several versions of the Bible and, while they pretty much agree with each other, I haven't found very much in any true history texts to support what reportedly took place in the Bible. I would have thought that someone else in the world would have noticed and recorded something as monumental as a 40 day flood, for example.
Because of that, I have a difficult time believing in God as he/she/it is decribed in the Bible. I'm still not convinced that there isn't a God, I'm just convinced that the God depicted in the Bible isn't the real deal.
I do think that the moral and life lesons taught in the Bible are good, I just don't believe they were divinely inspired. It's a shame that these lesons have been so twisted and warped over the centuries to serve someone else's agenda.

Raised a Roman Catholic here, still a roman catholic, do I go to church? No...
Does that make me less of a catholic if I do not go to church, or pray every night, or read the bible, I believe not... I still believe there is a God, I too believe there is a satan...
However, with recent events surrounding the sick things some roman catholic preists are doing to children, I believe that the vatican and roman catholic church should be modernized to include marriages of members of the church without scrutiny... abstenence is obviously not working for these guys, so let them marry so this crap will stop... it truly is sickening...
The world is dynamic, so to should be religion...
I am a traditionalist, but there does come a time when tradition just doesn't work and, moderization to keep up with the times is really what is needed... do i make any sense... probably not, but to sum it up, the church HAS to be modernized or catholicism will fall... it's traditions are destroying itself...
Its not just catholicism, its all the religions...
