Check this out Perhaps a bit of a teaser, Koolance had a PC partially submerged in oil on display. We always thought this kind of setup was a little nuts, but with Koolance checking it out, we can't help but wonder if we'll see a case filled with mineral oil from them.
AceHigh
That's cool as heck.
Eldaah
Nice. I've heard of people submerging their board in mineral oil, but never actually seen it. That's pretty sweet.
Mr Magoo
it must work v well
Mr Magoo
hvae you got a link to an aritlce or anything like that?
Jason
Make sure it is mineral water, not standard tap water!!!!!
AceHigh
It's actually oil (non-conductive), not water.

For all of comdex go here>>>>http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2001q4/comdex/
For just that case go here>>>>http://www.tech-report.com/etc/2001q4/comd...x/index.x?pg=11

ok, you can place your comp in either mineral oil, high grade...not cheap...but you have to move it...it cannot just sit there...

you can use distilled water...but over time, the water begins to attract conductive properties again, and you will need to totally revove the water, and fill it up again...this should be done roughly every 2-3 months...and again, the water must be moved...

the reason to move it is to cooL the cpu better...if it sits, it will not be as effective, and the water will become stagnant faster...
Mr Magoo
ok - so the oils good at dissapating the heat away.
AaronXP
THat is the question I have. Did they have a setup where they actually showed the thing working and running?? Or is this just something to show off and thats it?? It is REALLY awesome and would keep a cpu very cool!! icon_lol.gif
Mr Magoo
yeah - and it works fine because it dont conduct electricity... yet disipated heat very well.
MadCow
What would the bost be from doing that? cooling wise...
Would you need a pump then to keep the oil moving around?
nfinitefx_
I saw something like that before, some guys used some 3M product though, Flourine or something, it was pretty cool what they did with it:)
Then i've seen the people who just make a custom copper holder for Liquid Nitrogen and use that to set records, like the P4 @ 3.5GHz:)
SINNESTER
organising plans to steal that koolance pc

whos in?

of course if we succeed i get to keep it hehe icon_biggrin.gif
~sid~
maybe in a couple months, ill try it out....drop an old P2 in the oil....take some pics...record temps...
Mr Magoo
thow a match in... run away fast.. take some pics...

hmmmm...I have just had a thought.....I wonder how well that would work in a water cooling setup, but instead of using a radiator, use a modified water block with a peltier attached to cool the oil.
dr_geek
I want one with a clear case
The Captain
Sinnester Im with you
preaty funny though
To think one day you will taking your computer to the Gas Station to top it up with Oil. HAHAHA
embro
No mineral oil dosnt have good cooling propriety, if you ask me, submerging the whole stuff is useless, just use a basic watercooling setup with a good block and a good radiator, way safer, no need to change liquids often... i personaly use Methanol and water cooled in a mini fridge almost always at minus 3 Celcius (-3C), Methanol freezing point is -144C BUT 100% methanol might be dangerous (corrosion), Methanol / Water (ratio 33:66) freezing point is -37.3, this way you should be safe.

my 0.2 cents...

dumb.... i hate all that stupud liquid bullshit cooling. eventually, we will have very low power units that do not require active cooling. til then, i'll put up with what i got.

it is what it be
mew905
Yeah, unfortunately, I will never trust liquids with electronics, no matter how much people say its safe. Water cooling, one leak, your screwed, Oil cooling, gotta keep it movin, I dont wanna sit there doin that, and I dont wanna get a pump, I admit the hydro-cooled systems DO look cool, but I don't trust them at all...

Thought u guys would be interested in seeing this. its a real working version of an oil submerged pc...page also supplies temp, and mhz readings, but lil more info is available...

Check it out
