What are the errors (if any)? Open it up, go to tools. options, file types, hit select all, then apply. Several other apps try to hijack the media association.

-> SET PROGRAM ACCESS AND DEFAULTS
-> CLICK THE PULL DOWN MENU FOR CUSTOM
make sure that media player is the default player selected...

the only apps who hijack file extension are Windows Media Player and Real Player.
use a proper media player which behaves decently instead

winamp gives you the option in very clear terms, of assigning files to the application - the way applications should behave. if you just click-clicked your way through the installation without reading the prompts, you get what you click for, so to speak.
neither of the applications come close to RealPlayer however. the application from hell which hijacks files it does not even use along with all the other files, credit card numbers and neighbors hub caps it can find...

winamp is the ONLY player. even tho nullsoft sold out to ao-hell *shudders* they've managed to keep their program ad-free and system friendly, like it's always been. wmp and real are the worst players there are, and yah, i've used MANY of em. i'd like to see you wmp-ho's play ANYTHING else than microsofts own formats, straight after a fresh install. it won't and it can't.
but there are other good ones too. two excellent ones are quintessential player (www.quinnware.com) and another one is foobar2000 (www.foobar2000.org) both players with a wide support for other formats than wmp and mp3, which in my opinion a player is useless without. but then wmp has always been, since the day it was a midi-playing pos stacked away in the accessories folder

Quicktime will hijack file associations if you aren't paying attention and don't tell it not to. This is the same behavior I have observed in every media player I've tried, including Real and Windows Media players.
