Ok, I'm new here, but I need a question answered. I have dsl and my mom uses dialup on her computer, but for some reason, when she gets on dialup, I get knocked off of my computer and I'm on dsl. 7.gif It doesn't do it until she gets online though, when we receive phone calls it never does it. I checked to make sure everything was hooked up right to the dsl filters and they are, So I don't know what the problem is, Has anyone else ever had this problem? help.gif

never heard of that one , got us stumped.
pick up a switch , some 18 dollars , a card for mom some 10-15 dollars and put her on dsl.
bull
Make sure there is a line filter on the line that the computer uses to hook up to the dialup. I have DSL and 2 phones. One phone has a filter and I can use it and surf with no issues, but, if we use the other phone with no filter....kicks me off til the phone is hung up.

You can pick up the filters at a radio shack or any other computer supply store (best buy, staples...etc). Hope that helps. icon_mrgreen.gif

True , i assumed you have filters on all lines , I have to.
Jennifer
Thanks to both of you. I've got two filters hooked up, one to my computer and the other to my moms computer. I'll see if someone can check and see if everything is really hooked up right, My dad says it is, but obviously, it's not. icon_rolleyes.gif

If I understand correctly, which i seldom do, you should not have a filter on your computer with the dsl. You just need filters on the phones or computers that use the phoneline. All they are doing is ensuring that the phoneline is only using certain frequencies and staying out of the way of the part that the dsl uses.

Like I said, I may have this wrong, but that is how I am hooked and home and never have a problem, unless someone answers the downstairs phone (the one with no filter).

britney! icon_razz.gif but keepin on topic, i suspect it to be a weak signal. never ran across the prob here either, but old man runs his fax machine on same line as phone, and answering phone while fax is runnin breaks up the signal. would suspect the same behaviour from a dsl line

You got it right this time Bull. the filters are needed on phones, answering machines, and standard analog modems, but not inline to the DSL"modem".
It is possible that your mom's modem is exceeding the ability of the filter on that line either due to a defect in the modem or the filter.
Unless you have a spare modem and/or filter on hand to test with, I think Pappy's idea of a network/internet share is a great idea and should solve your problem.

Haha, Oh ok. I'll unhook the filter on my dsl then, since I have no phone in here. Thanks y'all! icon_biggrin.gif

Ughhh, I bet y'all are getting tired of me...lmao. Ummm, It's still doing it, I took the filter off of my dsl modem and hooked the phone line into the wall jack, but still it's doing the same thing when my mom gets online. Is the phone line coming from her computer supposed to be hooked into the filter too? I've got the phone line going from her computer into the filter and the phone is hooked into the filter too, Do I have it connected right? Both lines are running in the right jack thing too. Heck, I think I'll just go buy the materials for my mom to be on dsl too. icon_mrgreen.gif

ummm your dsl modem was pluged into a filter?? and it still worked??? wierd...

I would say setup a home lan... would it be easy to run some cat5 between the two computers?
Jennifer
Yep, It worked fine. Didn't give me any problems, except kicked me off when my mom got online, but it still does that, but, oh well... icon_biggrin.gif

You guys aren't doing something like say.... using one account from the same ISP? And dialing up with the same user name that your PPPOE DSL is using are you? Then yeah you'll get kicked off as their system sees you attempting to log in twice.
