I finally got my house wired and my second computer up and running, now I want to look at networking the 2 computers and share the printer.

Here is what I have:

DSL modem into Linksys BEFSR41 <- link to router info. Computer #1 is my main and # 2 is upstairs. Both are running XP Pro. There will be 2 other computers in the future (4 pork router and cabling already waiting for something to plug into).

How do I set this up so that I can share files and the printer. I am a total network nOOb, so be gentle. Hell, I was pleased just to get the CAT5 run and both the computers on the net. icon_wink.gif

The first part that I do not understand is how to get the computers to even see each other to share file and such??? icon_confused.gif

If you go to network neighborhood, you should be able to see your computers. If you share any folders on your pc's they should show up in there. When you share a folder on one PC (ie: create a share called data on PC1), you can goto to the other pc and map a drive (ie: map h: to \\PC1\data). You can also bring up IE or my computer and type \\PC1 in the address box and it should attach you to that PC and show you all the shared folders/printers. You can also bring up network neighborhood and browse the next work for pcs/shares.

I assume the computers are NTFS formatted ?

Remember lowest permission wins and no access means no access even when full control given as well.

Create user accounts on each PC, share the folders and give the users the relivant permissions to the Access Control Lists (ACL's) on the folders or drive you want to share.

Same with the printer share it go to the security tab and add users and permissions required.

If you use the everyone account everyone has access (simple) so no need to add individual accounts to folders / drives.

You can map drives or access via UNC paths \\server\share

Not interested in how but just want a network setup then XP has a wizard that will do it for you.

Bull...

if there is nothing shared the computers will NOT show up in Network Neighbourhood at all... as soon as you invoke a share they appear...

Like Jason said use the wizard. icon_smile.gif

I guess I am just network retarded. Odie had me setup the TCP/IP so that each computer had it's own IP from the router. I did the wizard and set it up on both computers. I set the folders to share. I still get nothing. Can't use the printers of see anything that I put in the shared folder on the other computer.

One thing though, if I try to remove the tick for read-only, it keeps coming back re-ticked?

I just may have to buy stock in cdr's if I want to transfer data? icon_neutral.gif

Any firewall software running on either computer?

Windows or ZoneAlarm etc...

That would stop your sharing unless configured... ZA has an option for local networks to share stuff, but it has to be enabled.

Try setting up matching user accounts and passwords on each computer, in a workgroup each computer is its own server and manages its own resources.

So for example you have 3 users and 3 PC's, setup 3 users with same username and password on each PC.

So you end up with 3 users with accounts on each PC that are the same which ever PC you use and each PC needs the same workgroup name.

For mine I had to not only share drives (making sure that the Everyone Group had Full Control, thank God for Firewalls!) I had to explicitly share some of the folders as well! XP wants you to put everything you want to share in the Shared Documents folder, which blows. I'm going to break down and build a server, create a domain, and make a regular network setup out of my stuff, just to avoid this kind of pain in my ass! 7.gif
Jason
I agree a Domain does seem a much better way of doing it and easier to manage.
bull
I have tried several different ways and had no luck at all. Not sure if it is ZAP or something else, but it just will not cooperate.

I reset everything back to the way I started, at least the internet works on both computers that way. icon_neutral.gif

Have you tried the built in network Wizard ?

I tried that too jas. I have got to be missing something or doing something wrong here. icon_confused.gif

My guess would then be ZAP 'protecting' your PCs from each other. Heck, I have a friend at work that couldn't log onto the sire we're using for our office football pool because of ZAP. Once he turned it off everything worked just fine. yes.gif
Jason
Turn off ZAP as your behind a router (firewall) and use the network connection wizard, then (maybe) re-enable ZAP.

If you re-enable ZAP you'll need to go into each PC and set it to allow your other IP addresses (or your router's DHCP IP range) through. Otherwise, you won't be able to connect to anything.

Maybe I will give it another go this weekend. icon_neutral.gif

Talked to coz yesterday am and he got me up and going!!! thumbup1.gif

Coz, you da' man. It was actually pretty simple, assigned IP's to the computers and set them up on the same workgroup and I can actually see the computers and the printer to share.

Now the question is...

I want to keep ZAP. How do I tell it to allow the sharing and access to the other computer? I put the IP in and it allowed me to see the other computer, but would not allow anything else. I set it up as a trusted ip.

Bro??? icon_twisted.gif

Just a setting...I am networked!!!!!

Many thanks for the input and mostly to coz and odie for getting me going. thumbup1.gif
Jason
Hmmm the question is why isn't DHCP assigned IP's from the router working, shouldn't have to have static IP's to get it to work dynamic ones should do the same.

I had him set it up like that Jason because of a couple of reasons.

1) You can disable allot more services in XP if you static the Comps
2) Faster boot up time in XP
3) If he goes to forward the ports, he will know what Comp is what IP for the router.
4) Because I like static assigned IPs icon_smile.gif

I agree on all 4 of those points.... wow! we agree on the same shit.

Good Job Bro!!!... I know talking to Coz was like the ultimate in hell... but at least it was worth it yucky.gif

So tell me what extra services can you disable with static IP's DHCP client and ?

Static assigned IP's are bad, Dynamic is much better, try setting a network up with a 1000 static IP's anyway DHCP can assign static IP's they are called DHCP reservations.

Good to see you can save a second or so on boot up wallbash.gif

I agree on 0 of the 4 icon_rolleyes.gif personally I would be working to get DHCP from the router working.
odie
Bull has 2 (maybe 3 comps) not 1000.

It saves more then a second or two on boot up we use DHCP at the offices and holy shit, it takes almost up to 30 seconds more with DHCP enabled.

And... bull has a linksys router, and last time i checked with linksys they recommended you setup your PC's with staic IP's.

I know you have very valid points Jas, but its much easier this way with a very small pool of computers.
Jason
I use DHCP and my computer takes 30 seconds to boot, go to static and it would take 0 seconds ? all Windows computers are DHCP enabled out the box and they all boot quick (XP especially) I don't get where this 30 seconds extra to boot comes from.
bull
I'm just glad it works.... winkiss.gif
Mandark
i ONLY use dhcp

that was bullshit if i ever saw it. ass-backward.... bull's comps were not configured for DHCP Jason... that is the reason... that or he has zap blocking everyting on all of them....

i am shaking my head now...
=F.P.M.=[WIG]
Now Now it matters not. it is fixed. what works for you isnt neccesarily the best for everyone. and boot time is measured in time from power on to usable windows. your does not take 30 seconds. or at least i doubt it does. also who says somone cannot exagerate a bit to make a point eh? i know all this because I AM THE SMARTEST MAN ALIVE.
bull
I do have DHCP enabled in the router. I have a static IP from my ISP, that is all setup in the router. The IP's I put in the tcp/ip settings are the sames ones that the router assigned anyway. I don't see any great difference. My main problem was my trusted zone security setting in ZAP. It works great now. I guess I don't see the huge issue of whether or not I have DHCP set up in XP or the router??

It works!!!! Was that not the point?? wallbash.gif
odie
And on that note...

Thread Closed...

Why? Because I can... winkiss.gif
