Great looking program, but it would be better with support for CDMA or iDEN phones...

i use bluetooth or IR to communicate phone <-> phone and phone <-> pc. why use this application? if this app is needed, you might want to consider a new phone.

Well, lets see...
1. Not everyone can afford a bluetooth phone...
2. Not all providers have bluetooth or IRDA capable phones...
Plus.. I'd prefer to plug my phone into my computer, it's a more secure connection...Plus frankly.. what good is BT on a phone anyways... a headset here, maybe a camera attachment there... but useless otherwise... Not to mention flaky at best... Trust me.. I work with phones on a daily basis, and I see more complaints about these BT enabled phones than I do about the non-BT phones...

IR works in a similar fashion. BT isn't strictly necessary, it's just more convenient.
a usb BT stick comes at around $25. most ppl have usb ports.
are the american/canadian cell phone prices horrible or why do you have to get your phone through your provider?
how about pre-paid solutions?

Very true...
Unfortunately.. there are carrier subsidy locks on the phones here, not to mention three or four different protocols for phones on this side of the sea...
CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access): The most prevalent in North America, as well as the new big thing in Asia, based off of the old Analog system, a digital system based off of the 800 and 1900 Mhz bands here in NA, and others in asia... Carriers in NA using CDMA are Verizon, Telus, Sprint, Bell, Virgin and a few other, smaller carriers...
GSM (Global System For Mobile Communication): The worldwide standard for mobile phones... Phones use SIM cards, and are easier to get at, but reception in NA is sketchy at best... Based off the 800 and 1800 Mhz band here in NA, and the 1900 worldwide... Carriers in NA using GSM are AT&T, Rogers, Cingular, T-Mobile, Fido and others...
iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network): Motorola proprietary protocol that combines the capabilities of a Cell Phone, Two-Way Radio, Alpanumeric Pager, and a wireless modem into a single phone... Bades off of the 800 and 900 Mhz band here in NA, as well as certain areas worldwide... There are only 3 carriers in NA that use iDEN: Telus, Nextel and Boost...
AMPS (Analog): The first cellular technology around, an industry standard, but not one that is used worldwide (from what I know) mostly in North and South America, analog is an underlying system now that the digital technologies have come along (see above). Analog operates in the 800 Mhz band... Most providers here in NA have an analog system...
Those are the main ones... with CDMA.. all the phones are provider locked, so unfortunately there is no way to use other providers phones on the networks... GSM on the other hand... if you can find someone who can "unlock" the handsets, any phone will work with a GSM provider...
The prices on the regular phones here aren't that bad, it's just if you want high end features you usually pay an arm and a leg for it...
Prepaid phones here, the rates start as low as $.29 a minute... it's not that bad, but in the US I'm not sure... (^_^)
Hopefully I didn't confuse you any, but I was just spouting off what I knew... heheh
