A cable box is specific to the cable feed your provider is using, there many types of systems in use. A old VCR can tune in stations on standard freq only. (just for info in case you aren't aware)

You will only be able to get the unscrambled ones from a vcr. It depends on how many channels aren't scrambled on your cable system, You can probably have the cable provider rent you another cable box but thats $$$$ per month more.

I use a SAT dish with a 80 gig hard drive built in. Then I play it into the computer using S-video line and audio jacks. I am using ATI All-In-Wonder 7500 and 9000 cards, I love them.

My Sat receiver uses IFR and UHF remote so the channel can be controlled from all over the house. I've captured over 500 hours of programing and burnt it edited to cd-r and dvd.

i dont have cable boxes or anything, the cable wire goes right into the tv, i only said cable box because i thought i could just use it to change channels... so would a vcr work for just changing regular cable channels?

I have a couple old VCRs that don't work properly anymore that you are welcome to.... only problem, I'm in Canada.

thanks for the offer cswchan, but shipping would probably be more than they are worth...
