I mean nothing in the bank, no phsycial assets you may sell off, skint. You have just found an envelope with $10,000. cash. Non-sequential unmarked bills in a remote location. Do you report or, take some out and then report or screw it, just take it all and keep your head down?

Take it and secure it for my use. I did not think like this in the past but I was taught a lesson, and I learned it well. A fellow soldier and I over in Vietnam were driving down the road in the Di An base camp and I spied something blowing down the road, we pulled over and got out. We picked $385 in Military Script (GI $$$).
We took it back and turned it in to the company commander to be claimed after 30 days. At the end of 30 days the money was used for booze for a Officer only party.
If I saw someone loose something I would give it back or like a billfold or purse with a ID in it, I return it promptly always, But if the find is unattached it goes into my funds.
If I was carrying a large amount of money, ($200 is large for me) you can bet I have the Walther PPK on me with the safety off, and I have a personal 6 foot circle of safety. Smart people don't enter the circle, when I go for walks in the area near my house, I carry it even when not carrying money. The 6 foot circle is to allow for 1 warning shot and 3 kill shots and the rest or for their friends.
I have a carry permit.

Hypothetical question yields a hypothetical answer, of course.

I would probably make inquiries to the local law enforcement about large sums of money missing. If there are no reports I'd keep it.

Yeah, and how exactly would this work:
- I hand in the money for the police
- Someone walks in two days later, and says "Hey Mr. Policeman, I lost an unsigned envelope with some 10k inside in one alley, please give it to me" How on Earth could
anyone tell if he's lying or telling the truth?
Hell, I would keep the money! If you have that much, keep an eye on it, or at least an address on the envelope!

My conscience would dictate that I would have to hand it in and trust the cops (there's a rich one) to do the right thing. Also the police wouldn't tell how much money there was in the envelope or where it was found. They aren't quite that dumb. I would also demand a receipt, because
I'm not quite that dumb, yet.

I'm afraid survival instinct would kick in for me at that point. Since the circumstances are dire, I'm thinking I'd hang onto it.
As Goofproof said, if I'd seen someone lose it, I'd make attempt to return the money. But with that kind of scratch, there's no way I'd trust the cops. Sorry, but they're underpaid public servants - just as human as the rest of us. And the big advantage they'd have over me at the time is their jobs.
Sorry if that makes me a bad person and I failed this test.

It's easy to take the high road in a public forum, but when it came time to fish or cut bait....it'd be interesting to see who really did what they professed they'd do in that situation. I wonder..............

LOL. Didn't say I wouldn't be sorely tempted. Damn right I would be. However, my friend once pointed out, in a rather sulky way, that if I broke something in the middle of nowhere, with no witnesses around, he said I would still leave a note saying what happened and who was responsible and my name and address, plus phone number. Wish I could be a little less "stiff" but I just can't. Believe me, I would scream and kick and probably swear at myself, but I would have to return the money. Why, because I would be thinking that maybe it was for somebody way worse off than me. And that guilt would kill me. I sure as hell am not perfect and never will even come close, but on this issue, there isn't much wiggle room for me.

well, first of all, anyone who has $10k in an envelope is to rich for their own good. or has some real issues. i would take the money, but half of it would go to charity. why? because there would be a VERY good chance the money was NOT going to be used in a good/ benevolent manner.

I think I'd let the authorities know that I had found an unspecified large sums of money in an undescribed container and that I would hold it for 90 days. At the end of 90 days, if there was no claim for the amount found, in the container found and in the relative vacinity in which it was found, I'd be $10k richer.

I am selfish, take it all. No police, no charity, I'd pay off the bills, kill debt and move on. Sure I might wonder "what if" and I might feel gulity about the fact that I did not help those less fortuante than me. but considering the circumstances, I am pretty much on the boat already.
Call me crazy, I've burned too many times, and if chance did come to me like that, I would take it, all the way to freedom.
