where do you get your taste in music?
Felix4067
I couldn't pin down one source if you held a gun to my head. Partly my older sisters, partly my job, partly friends and what they've listened to when I'm with them, partly my life attitude and how it coincides with what various artists are doing.

The trouble with having incredibly eclectic musical taste is that there are many reasons for every genre I listen to regularly.

Pretty much the friends I hung with in high school (They got me into all kinds of things... )

Iron Maiden and Metallica I discovered all by myself. I grew up with my dad pumping Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Neil Young and everything else like it. Thats where all that came from. AC/DC is just another one of those icon_smile.gif.

Not sure how specific or general to answer your question.
Just picking one source has to be American FM radio.

Let me clarify that. Depending on your age that may not mean much.
When I was a teenager, which is when most folks start getting their roots set, FM was just coming into it's own. Not the AM bubblegum pop stuff. They would play lesser known rock and whole albums.
Even FM today, IMO, isn't as good as it was in the mid to late 70"s.

When I was in young I was in England and my brother bought a techno tape with a song call hypnotica. I listened to that tape the whole time I was there. It was the first music that really clicked with me.

Then when I hit high school my friends made fun of my music taste and I started listening to alternative. I have only recently returned to my techno roots and I'm loving it.

I got my love of Oldies and Classic Rock from my parents. I got into Alternative during high school since that's what a lot of people were listening to. My friend got me into Metal, Progressive and Jazz over the summer because I spent a lot of my free time at his house. He even got me to go to my first two concerts (Lake Trout and Primus).

I'm a low brass horn player, Baritone Horn/Euphonium & Trombone in particular from the school days. I started in 6th grade and picked it up immediately. I'm told my father was an incredible trumpet player (when he wasn't being an asshole - my Mom's words... icon_wink.gif )

As a result, I tend to prefer music that is constructed well and feels like all the elements belong together. And it's not about the lyrics as much for me as the actual music supporting it. Which is one reason I'm not a big fan of rap - most of it is not well put-together and the lyrics are pretty much saying the same thing by different people... and everyone's pissed for the most part.

Music that's fun to play is also a lot easier and fun to listen to, IMHO.

Plus, I grew up in the '80s and early '90s for the most part, just before people figured out how to rip each others' music off and make money at it. 'Samplers' do not have my respect as they're lazy in my eyes - it takes more skill to come up with your own stuff than rip someone else off.

My dad bought me a guitar when I was really young - I grew up listening to anything guitar based - from Hank Marvin and Chet Atkins right through Buddy guy, John lee hooker and then on to Led Zeppelin, Dire Straits etc.

I used to go along to gigs etc and not know who the bands were - I discovered a lot of good music that way!

My dad was probably my biggest influence though!
