I've never overclocked a CPU before icon_smile.gif I got an Athlon 1.2
Any tips? I've got some Arctic Silver on it, and a FOP38 (noisy), the CPU temp is usually 40 degrees celcius on a good day. Highest has been 45. I've heard about unlocking the CPU, increasing FSB, etc. etc.

I know I could probably get an answer from google but I figured I'd make a first post here icon_smile.gif Thanks

The easyest way would be to up the FSB from the BIOS... a lil at a time... do some benchmarking... if it does not crash or start a fire then move the FSB up a lil bit more....

(just joking about the fire... that will only happen if ya take your HSF off icon_wink.gif )

what should i benchmark with? i've got 3dmark2001se and pcmark2002

Just went over the guide, couldn't I just connect the bridges instead of using the golden fingers device?
AceHigh
Yes you can just connect the bridges.

Bench with 3DMark 2K1SE. PCMark currently has too many bugs and it is a different bench from 3DMark.

Also, make sure your Overclock is as stable as can be....

Test stability with a distrubited computing project such as Folding@home or Seti. These will use all your spare cpu cycles to do what they do, and thus load your cpu to 100% for as long as you allow the client software to run.

I personally like running Folding@home as it's medical research, it's nice loading my cpu to 100% i can find out if it's really stable or not.

Playing a game like RTCW or Q3 for a hour or two, or a benchmark for 20 mins isn't a stability test IMHO...

100% cpu load for 24Hrs is a stability test...

Hope this is of help to ya....Happy Oc'in man

What team are you on ToranaGuy? I am with MadOnion. I have it going whenever my comp is on.

Team OCAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My rig doesn't fold that well tho, only a pII 350 @490.....I can't run it 24/7 either......I run it as much as i can tho :p

I think i'm hanging around 515th of about 600 or so ppl....Most ppl on Team OCAU have like 5 'puters with heaps more processing power than me tho....

I'm hoping to afford a dual slot 1 mobo in a few months, then i can use both my pII cpu's in this box and fold twice as much, and this mobo will again become home to my spare celery 300a @ 450, the celery replacing my AmD k6-2 pc that i use to run my cd burner icon_biggrin.gif,i'm going to give the k6-2 to my g/f icon_biggrin.gif and hopefully climb up the ladder a bit within Team OCAU icon_biggrin.gif

I just have to wait on my Uni student budget to allow me to afford my dualy icon_cry.gif

Is Team OCAU still number 1 ? I might start folding for them again

BTW thx for the info guys
ssj3steve
I am 168th out of 267 people. [H]ardOCP is in 1st place by about 1000 points over OCAU.

Nope, were sitting second to the [H] dudes.......plz come and re-join our cause......

I'm tryin to get 60 pIII 667's @ uni to fold for me.....depends on the attitudes of the tech dudes.........

one thing you will have to do to get a stable OC is increase your Vcoe (this is the voltages going to your CPU) this should be easy, depending on your mobo you should be able to do this in the bios. Crank it up to atleast 1.85 (prob as high as it goes)
uNtOldPAIN
also increase the voltage on the ram....in bios "io" voltage...try to overclock the ram as much as possible before u start on the chip....try diffrent combos with the ram and chip cas 2 ram helps also.....
uNtOldPAIN
Is the chip unlocked??
~sid~
just remember, O/C can potentially render you mobo/cpu/ram...and many other components useless...be careful, and do everything in small steps...do not raise your vcore all the way up to 1.85 right away...take it up gradually...until the system is stable...the more juice the cpu gets, the faster it dies...
uNtOldPAIN
like he said...."baby steps" of ull get burned...well ur chip will icon_twisted.gif

I couldn't be bothered with reading all the posts but if you haven't got them get SiSoftware and CPU stability test 6.0 or above(the second one heats up the CPU to show you worst case icon_rolleyes.gif)
crag_v
another thing to increase stability is keeping the cpu multiplier even with the fsb multiplier (ignoring voltages and such for the moment)

so:

fsb of 100 and a cpu multiplier of 100 will give you your actual chip speed
ie. duron 900 at 900
fsb of 110 and a cpu multiplier of 110 will give you 990 (in theory).

Sis and some Gigabyte boards spit the dummy unless these multipliers are the same.

....or so i am led to believe?
FrodoXC
umm i wouldn't really recommend cranking the Core Voltage to 1.85v
you're CPU is already running at 45ºc Load? you could end up doing some serious damage to your cpu unless u have serious cooling.

i've gotten an extra 100mhz by increasing the multiplier without having to change the voltage.

just be careful when u OC icon_smile.gif increase in small steps.
FrodoXC
haha i didn't notice ~sid~ said almost the exact same thing!! ooh well. can't hurt hearing it twice

*shakes head* dunno how i missed sid's post b4.
