last night- went through a VERY small portion of the accumulated computer crap in my attic, and threw away about 400 pounds of old video cards, NICs, motherboards, cases, documentation, monitors and other peripheral hardware including a legal-size flatbed scanner circa 1988, IIRC.

-made a late-night run to Walmart and stocked up on vitamins, St John's Wort, and Ginseng as well as restocking the toiletries in my travel kit.

-continued ripping my CD collection to MP3 so I can box up the CDs and pack them away for the coming move <not to mention, so I'll have some bloody room!>

-started looking for a cheap used in-dash MP3 player on Ebay for my Blazer.

-picked up the front skid and gastank skid plates for my Jeep from the airfreight depot. Nimrod running the forklift nearly gored my gastank, then nearly put the forks through the fiberglass rear hatch- all the while I'm telling him to stop what he's doing. Finally, I snatched the keys out of the lift's control panel and threw them down an aisle of the warehouse. Sound like an arse? Probably-- but I wasn't about to give him a 3rd chance at screwing up my vehicle. Besides- honestly- how hard is a forklift to drive? I used to drive them all the time when I worked at 84 Lumber and various other jobs.

-read up on my new welder: this one and absolutely can not wait till the rain clears this weekend...

Went to my best friends dad/ my Godfather's funeral. A truly devastating afternoon. 400+ people turned up which kind of reflects the mans' popularity/personality.
Funerals are bad enough, close friends and close relatives are worse.

At least the wake was a bit more uplifting, everybody honouring the mans wishes and trying to have a happy send off. In his will, he stated that that he wanted cheapest coffin available so that extra cash could be put behind the bar for everyone else to enjoy.

At times like this, you really get to know who your friends are.

my condolences, Fubar. I don't even know the gentleman, and I'd put a year's wages on his having been the salt of the earth.....

thanks BK, he was a good man. I don't want to bum this thread out so....

also today I spent good times with old friends, some of which I hadn't seen for over 10 years, and that was a good thing.

I've felt a little smug today wheeeeeh.gif

I helped my friend's mom get set up on some dating Web sites, i,e, edited her profile and uploaded pics. She had a few photos of herself to scan. I didn't think any of photos did her justice (and the quality wasn't so great), so I took some digital ones of her and uploaded them. She still preferred her original pics. But today, she emailed me and said the ones I took of her had the best response, and to forget about her original pics.

Um...I'm not sure if that made sense.

Anyway, she's a slim, young-at-heart 57 year old...Loves to travel and enjoys the outdoors...has blonde/white hair and blue eyes...You can PM me if you want more info... wheeeeeh.gif

Dropped the car off for a service, then caught the train (ie the cattle wagon) to London for a lunch meeting. Played sardines on the Tube and ended up with an hour to waste in a Starbucks.

Lunch with the Boss and another colleague went well. Back on the crappy Tube & train (I sooo hate public transport) and then off to pick up the car.

A day gone for 2 hours work and a free lunch, with a clean car into the bargain. thumbup1.gif

yup, got one of those myself.... bought it from a friend who'd owned it for about 5 years, for $100. It's a hoss, alright-- even with my not having a 50 amp service for it. My satisfaction with the Lincoln line is why I chose this one over a $100 cheaper Hobart

Once I get a house, I'm wiring up 50 amp service for her, absolutely.

The FCAW/GMAW box will do everything from sheetmetal through 5/16" single-pass, and the AC225 will do up to 7/8" withthe right rod from what I understand. I never work with anything over 1/4" thick <and that's only VERY rare- for my sliders on the jeep for example> so I think I've just bought the last welder I'll ever need.

Now to find someone to sell the CH stick welder, and the HF FCAW box to. The CH box is about useless <never could get a good bead out of it, but I was trying on WAY too thick stock>, and the HF box works pretty well. I was able to actually get it to weld the 1/4" pretty well by putting it on "hi" and wire speed all the way down and taking my time running the bead. However, I'd long ago reached it's limits in terms of penetration and so on. The 3200HD was money well spent- I'll save 1/4 of it's price <$460> this weekend alone when I reinforce the factory trackbar bracket on my Jeep.

stuff I did:
-yesterday- ordered bushwacker fender flares for my Jeep. See the one over to the left to see them. Wasn't going to order them as they're expensive <$350>, but they're the best. Lots of reports of lesser brands being ripped to shreds on trails, and they cost just about as much. Wasn't going to run flares at all, but got pulled by an officer Wednesday for the tires sticking out past the body. Luckily, in the course of talking to him it came up that I was in the jeep club and know a fellow officer. He let me go with a warning instead of a $100 ticket. Figured I might as well go ahead and cough up the money for the flares now while I have it, than to have to pay for them later AND the moving violation.

 Plus, they'll keep mud out of the Jeep, and off of it, while I'm wheeling. Plus, sure- I like the look.

-today- came to work, and in the course of addressing a few issues here I've gotten 20 more CDs ripped to MP3 and ready to box up. CRIKEY I've got too many bloody CDs!!!

-wife called me this morning while I was in the lab. I work in an RF secure area so she left voicemail:

wife:"Hi honey- just wanted to call you and let you know I got the flowers, and thanks for the wonderful card and poem. You're such a sweety! I love you, you're the BEST! You're in trouble tonight!"

... which when I walked outside with the other guys to get away from work for a bit, I received... so I called her at work, and got one of the ladies at the front desk:

me:"Hi, Elaine-- did Heather get any flowerrs today? Yes? Well.... then let me speak to her."

wife:"Hi honey-- I got your flowers! You made my day.. how is yours?"

Me: <sullenly> "Be alright once I figure out who's sending you flowers....."

wife: <cautiously> "oh come on Phil, don't joke around..."

me: "...."

wife: <regretfully> "ok.. well I guess I should tell you, then...."

<at this point, my heart's dropped about 30,000 feet>

wife: "it's APRIL FOOLS, goof!"

<damnit-- I'd just 10 minutes prior been wondering how come she hadn't done anything that morning to get me, as she ALWAYS does something for April Fools>.

Gets me every year... and you'd think I would see it coming!

-found out the wierd clunking sound I've been having in the Jeep is where my el-cheapo bumpstop <hockey puck, epoxied in> broke loose from the spring hat.. which is a good thing in that it's nothing life-threatening, but it's a bad thing in that I'm now going to have to drill through 3" of rubber and then drill and tap the spring hat for a bolt long enough to hold them in place--- which means COMPLETELY disassembling the front suspension. Ah well-- I need to pull the front coils and install the taller ones anyway...

- err.. let's just say, the wife made sure I'll sleep VERY well again tonight. icon_wink.gif

-went to traffic court for the ticket I got for "improper turn" <no less than 15 officers at the intersection, I smell a fundraising effort> and plead guilty to get out of there quicker. Dropped my fee from $252 to $115. STILL ridiculous, but much more palatable.

-currently listening to the Indigo Girls "Rite of Passage" CD. This is a disk my wife sent me when we first started talking back in 96. It has a lot of significance to us, and the lyrics are just amazing:

GHOST

There’s a letter on the desktop
That I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to
In our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever
From the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons
Shadowing my dreams

And the mississippi’s mighty
But it starts in minnesota
At a place that you could walk across
With five steps down
And I guess that’s how you started
Like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me
And I start to drown

And there’s not enough room
In this world for my pain
Signals cross and love gets lost
And time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits
I need you the most
I’m in love with your ghost
I’m in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret
That gets whispered in a hush
(don’t tell a soul)
When I wake the things I dreamt about you
Last night make me blush
(don’t tell a soul)
And you kiss me like a lover
Then you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river
Play your memory like a piper

And I feel it like a sickness
How this love is killing me
I’d walk into the fingers
Of your fire willingly
And dance the edge of sanity
I’ve never been this close
I’m in love with your ghost

Unknowing captor
You never know how much you
Pierce my spirit
But I can’t touch you
Can you hear it
A cry to be free
Oh I’m forever under lock and key
As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island
As the sand beneath me slips
As I burn up in your presence
And I know now how it feels
To be weakened like achilles
With you always at my heels

This bitter pill I swallow
Is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can’t swim free
The river is too deep
Though I’m baptized by your touch
I am no worse than most
In love with your ghost

You are shadowing my dreams
(in love with your ghost)
(in love with your ghost)
(in love with your ghost)
