well before I say wat I did...

does anyone have 30-40 killatons of plutonium I can borrow?
Dragonfly
Hmmm .... sorry SG have been using the stuff ( plutonium) to replace gas out this way! At $3.10 a gal-low grade for gas it works just fine, and no lights are needed-all the car glows bright white, and is a nice warm feeling too.
Snuffy
God you think $3.10 is bad. Were up to $3.25 here. I have been riding my bike just to save money. I guess its a good thing it has been a warm winter!!!!
the_burner
Gas has creeped back up to $1.02 per liter, which works out to $4.60Cdn per gallon. Sheesh.

got motivated and got to digging on my driveway project. now that I have some informed, professional opinions on it and, frankly, have relearned how to use a shovel, SMARTLY (ask any ex-grunt- using a shovel ain't as simple as you might think... and I am ashamed I'd forgotten!). Moved about 2 cubic yards of earth from 1500-2100 (lots of breaks, and yet still more than I have gotten done on this in over a year), much of which was used to backfill what I'd dug before (WAY too deep!). Going to halve the job- was going to dig it 12" deep all throughout, put down 4" of builder's sand, 4" of gravel, and 4" of concrete. Well, that would be needed, if I were to drive a tank on this thing- but my jeep's nowhere near that heavy, so no need. I'll dig it 6", an inch of sand after letting what I've moved about dry out and pack in, an inch of gravel, and 4" of fiber-reinforced concrete. No rebar, no mesh, nothing else needed. Actually, the sand and gravel aren't even really needed, but I'm one to overbuild, and they'll make leveling the foundation off a darn sight easier.

Put air in my kid's bike tires. A few minutes later nearly crapped myself-- I happened to be looking up at him when suddenly his rear tire let go with a lound pop, venting directly at his shirt. I heard the crack, saw the shirt move, and it sounded and looked exactly like someone had just been shot with a high-powered rifle. For a nanosecond I thought someone has shot him, then realized there was no blood, he was still on his feet. Jesus what a horrific feeling. Scared him, too- he started crying about how he couldn't ride his bike now after the shock of the sudden expulsion of air passed.

No, we don't live in a bad neighborhood where people get shot. But ya never know these days, you know?

and very shortly, will have updated my blog. icon_smile.gif

I know the feeling Burnt im a grunt myself. I finallly got around to putting a new exhaust on the jeep and throddle body spacer!

Finally meandered home from my SO's apartment (he's out of town, I've been staying there for the last couple of weeks so I was a 5-minute walk from work rather than at home, which is a 20-minute drive). Did copious amounts of laundry (mine and his), planned my mom's 71st birthday dinner and dessert for tomorrow (her birthday is today, but she's out with friends), cleaned the house, cleaned out my car, organized the spice cupboard, and re-introduced myself to the cat.

It's not even 6pm yet. shock.gif

About to colour my hair then do a hot oil treatment on it, then I'm going to collapse in a vanilla-scented bubble bath with lots of candles, a bottle of Viognier and a good book. I suppose I should eat something first, though. icon_confused.gif

ex-Army here-- got out in 94 after doing 6. Just realized the other day I'd be retiring next year. Damn.

What kinda jeep you got? 90 XJ here, in the midst of a buildup which is on hold till I get the driveway done. I need the flat workspace sans mud to do my Dana44 swaps, gas to diesel swap, paint, bumpers, flooring inside the house, etc.....

EDIT: BTW, Snuffy. .: spills out a little beer on the grass : Here's to ya, and absent companions.
Snuffy

I do. I don't let ANYONE else's tools touch my vehicles. Because it's been my experience with the local "mechanics" that they're a bunch of crooks and bumbling idiots.

Not only am I swapping to diesel, I'm going to run veggie oil. Will be picking the engines up as soon as Mother Nature decides to thaw out Buffalo, NY, which is where they are at present.
Snuffy
no as far as who does it i was wondering if you had a kit in mind or were just going part by part? i also work on my own stuff, minus minor things. like i blew all the gears out of my rear diff, ring and pinion, spider gear, bearing, everything.. that i had an off road shop here in town do but i dont know how to reset gears so!

Went on my first 'fire' call. Just a small grass fire that was under contol before we got there. Did get to drive the old army surplus jeep brush truck though. thumbup1.gif

There is no such thing as a gasoline to diesel engine conversion kit. I am designing, engineering, imagineering, whatever you want to call it- the whole darn mess, myself.

I believe in this credo- real Jeepers (gearheads, wheelers, whatever) learn to do it themselves. I build suspensions, weld, rebuild transmissions, rebuild transfer cases, engines, you name it- myself.

Gears are easy. Just time consuming and frustrating more than anything. The principles behind them are straightforward though. Now automatic transmissions-- that's black freakin' magik if you ask me. I understand about half of the stuff in them-- and I just get a good book and do what it tells me to do. icon_smile.gif Videos help as well. After that, all you need is a few bins, a partwashing bucket, lots of table space, and the patience of a saint. Or is it lots of Scotch?

EDIT: forgot to mention: I owe my Jeeping habit, and most of the whole of the above, to Mister4X4.

Gee, THANKS, Eric! :P
Snuffy
Oh ya i know that. ive been a certified mechanic as well but i still dont want to dick with it. i think the one thing that really stops me is i dont have the time. other than that i pretty much do my own!

Ready to start again for an hour or so on taxes. Then off to the local electronic store to check out new computer equipment, and video series ... JAG, 3rd season.

Got the call that my SO successfully arrived at the airport and received his ticket (I was a little nervous, I've never booked a flight for someone else before). Now I just have to wait another two hours so I can pick him up.

Of course, air travel being MUCH faster than ground travel, I have to leave here shortly after his plane lands in Philadelphia for a two-hour layover or I don't have a hope in hell at getting to Detroit before he does, but whatever. icon_biggrin.gif

bought another bike:

1998 KLR650. This particular one has a wiped-out upper end of the motor. No matter, parts are plentiful and dirt cheap on Ebay.

Bought for $750. It's looking like I need about $60 worth of odds and ends off the 'bay (clutch lever perch, brake lever, springs for stand and rear brake) a head, and possibly a new jug and piston. Which , if the jug and piston are needed, I'll go ahead and bore out this jug aind install the 685 kit, for a whopping $350.

I think I'm about $600 at worst, from riding this thing. Which puts me at about $1400 into the bike which is only just barely above what the book value is (and you can NOT buy one of these things in decent shape for less than $2000 around here- and that will be $1400 for this bike with a new motor with better piston, rings, etc than the factory had, once I am done). These things are like 2-wheeled jeeps. Anything that runs worth a damn goes for way over book value.

No, I didn't NEED another bike. But this was too damn good a deal to pass up, especially considering I was about to trade my 650R in on one (and lose my shirt in the process!) Nw I can go check out those dirt roads I keep seeing icon_smile.gif
the_burner
So are you keeping this one and ditching the street bike? Keeping both? Btw, I can see your face in his, to an extent. icon_smile.gif
burntkat
keeping both bikes. I'd lose my shirt if I was to sell the Ninja. Depreciation and all that. The KLR is the bike I originally wanted, but it was too tall for me. Wish I'd known about lowering links then! But I HAD to have a bike I could put both feet on the grouond with, so I got the 650R streetbike

When I got my 1983 Suzuki 650 Savage it was because it had one of the lowest seat heights going on an "intro" bike. One cylinder, lots of torque not much top speed. Having short legs really sucks when it comes to having/owning a bike. Then again, having extra longs legs must be just as much a pain in the arse.
