Screw that - find an AMC 304, 360, or 401 and drop it in instead. The cool thing is it'll be a complete bolt-in deal - only have to change the passenger side motor mount... it'll bolt up to the transmission even.
Plus, you'll be preserving a little Jeep heritage, considering those engine came offered as optional equipment - unlike a Chevy 350.
Thats not a half bad idea. Thanks Eric If i can find one cheap and in great shape i just may do that

Look for any full-size Jeep from the late-60s to mid-80s. I got my 360 out of a '77 Wagoneer for $400 - with the TH400 transmission still bolted to it - could've had the whole tamale for $600... but I didn't need an empty FSJ taking up space in my yard - I'm not a redneck, after all. Later, I found an '82 with a TC727 (AMC's version of the TF727) automatic, which is a direct bolt-on between any AMC engine and the Dana 300 transfer case - got it for $125... and sold my TH400 to another Wagoneer owner for $100. I've actually thought about dumping my T-176 4-sp. even with the 258 I-6 still in there.
You can find adapter kits to suit your needs, but basically, any AMC engine will bolt-up to any AMC transmission. Not all of their trannies will bolt-up directly to all of their transfer cases... so a little research might help.
Edelbrock also makes a good selection of performance parts for these engines as well. My pal Jim has a 304/T-18/Dana 20 in his '75 CJ-5, and with the Edelbrock Performer Intake/Carb/Cam combination, along with the Edelbrock ceramic shorty headers, that thing flat-out boogies.
I'm still working out money issues (only for justifying dumping the 360 in mine and doing it right = roughly $3000), but once I get my engine/tranny done, it should outrun his CJ-5. I should be able to squeeze almost 350 hp out of it with just the Edelbrock goodies. Not bad for a 215 hp factory rated engine.
Chevy's are definitely easier to build-up with all the aftermarket support. But AMC V-8s just have a different level of cool factor that even the Chevy guys recognize. It's all good though.
Have fun with whatever you come up with.

Im already have a duel transfer case in my tj. A buddy had an old dana 300. But the thing is i hardly ever use it. I have the teraflex low range transfer case and thats all i ever really need to use! But this new engine and trans is probably going to go into the CJ8 i bough 2months ago. I think i wanna run dana 80's in it but i dont really see the need. I can get a pair of 60's from dutchman for the price of 1 80. This is going to be a long way off, i still dont even know what color i want to paint it! Im thinking mud brown!

No, but I can find out if you're interested.
I really need to just keep, and get back to work on, my XJ. But if you're interested, I'll give it a look.
Hey, you fly out here and buy it, I can't offer you a place to crash (sorry, small house, no room), but I can darn sure buy you dinner and a couple beers. We'll have a hellofa time.

Repaired a roof problem-fingers crossed! Had about 5 helpers to remove a center portion, and got rid of tar and rotten wood. All gone to dump-yes. Covered this portion for tonight with plastic, (in case of rain) and will start tomorrow to replace wood, and put new platform in place with metal trim (flashing) for walls and edges.

Give in to temptation... I dare ya.
Just do it. Afterwards, you'll be like, 'XJ? What XJ?'
What's a D200? Maybe Dana 20? Maybe a Quadratrac. Either of them are not stock for an '80 model. The installed tranny's gotta be a Tremec T-176 4-speed, if it's an original '80 model bolted up to a D300. If the second tranny mates up to the D20, then it's most likely a T-18 or T-20 (if it's a '4'-speed as well. If it's an auto, it'll either be a TH400 (that mates up to a Quadratrac or D20), a TC727 or TF999 (both mate up to the D300). The TF999 is an automatic with a lock-up torque-converter (worth an extra 150 rpms of 'overdrive')... but the TC727 is a 1.0 final drive - no OD.
$3K is a steal for all that... can't touch an '80 model so well equipped for under $5K these days.

I dont know. I dont think you can have the "perfect jeep" well for long anyways. There is always something new and exciting that you want or need that comes out right after you get the expensive high and mighty thing that you wanted or needed. See my point!! second day in a row running on 2 hours of sleep.
Worked my 8.. ok, 10... and a busy one it was. Both of my lab people called out sick today. So I had to do the admin stuff all by myself, AND document it. Either part being a full day's work.
Then to make things REALLY interesting-- the chic that minds the Remedy server decided to test some new "features". On the production server. Without telling anyone. GRRrrrrrrrrrrrr.....
Worked till 1800, headed home. Passed a friend who'd called me earlier in the day, who I'd invited to bring his bike over to my house so I could bleed the front brake lines (if you've not had to bleed motorcycle brakes, you have no idea what a pain this can be). He followed me to the house and I bled the brakes- shocked him by getting over 15" of bubble out of the line.

He bought beer for my trouble, and he volunteered to help me get the transmission/transfer case assembly back int my blazer this weekend. That's like benchpressing my bike up under the truck- 400 pounds. I don't think he realizes.
