Thank-you, J. I appreciate it very much. I'll probably bung in the application tomorrow, online. I'm really getting too old for this shit. I also agree with you Pappy on the hunting. I'm not for killing any of God's creatures however I realize that certain species have to be "culled" every once in a while since the human race fecked up the balance by trying to wipe out the lynx, fox, wolves, cougars, coyotes and bears.

I respect that opinion....
down in western PA it's kinda a way of life to us, we're helping the enviorment by hunting instead of letting animals over-populate and run out of food which in turn makes them starve to death...

and also by using the meat as a source of food...personally I use everything thats eatable...good food, plus it's leaner then grocery bought meats such as steaks, or porkchops...(read below)
we don't kill for sport...we kill to use...

A three ounce serving of roast venison contains on average about 157 calories. By comparison, a similar serving of moose contains 152 calories, caribou 160 calories and elk 130 calories. The same portion of sirloin beef contains about 230 calories. Venison is an excellent food option for anyone following a calorie controlled weight loss diet.

Peap that really is a nice kill!!!!!

An open comment to all hunters here. What you do is between you, the local government, game wardens and your God and this is NOT meant to stir shit up or piss anyone off.

Let me state my opinion for the record in succinct terms that no one has any trouble understanding:

1) I don't believe in hunting for "me." What others do is their business as long as they do it humanely as possible.

2) If a person(s) hunt for food, that is one thing. If they hunt for "sport", well define sport and to whom. Not for a terrorized animal, is it?

3) I fully understand hunting to put food on the table and hunting to cull an animal population that has expanded beyond it's reasonable growth/environmental limits.

4) In reference to the above #3, culling of the "herd" is not only reasonable but neccessary so that only the strongest of the herd survive and reproduce thereby continuing the species.

5) Killing anything for just for killing sake is not only sick but wasteful if you don't use as much of the kill as possible. If you kill out of fear or anger, that is not good for you or anyone else.

6) If you do hunt please respect property rights and "quotas."

7) Please take the appropriate hunter/firearm saftey courses and make sure that your licences/permits are up to date. No use getting "pinched" because some of gov't. money grab aka licence/permit is out of date. They get enough of our money without having to contribute extra for them to waste/squander thru fines.

8.) Please make sure that all your hunting weapons/ammunition are ALWAYS secured from children, foolish young adults and idiots. Tragedies occur; please don't let the circumstances "happen" within your family.

9) I understand the "urge" to hunt. Believe me. I have relatives that do it fairly regularly. They have asked me to join them. However, I think it was to set me up to get a load of rock salt in the ass. LOL. Kidding. As a kid, I shot a bird once with a high powered pellet gun. This was in the summer of grade 8, so I was a teenager, not a child. The bird didn't die right away. I still remember it thrashing around on the ground and the guilt that situation produced. I had to pick it up and kill it with my bare hands. That made me never want to hunt again.

10) Fishing, with the catch and release program, seems reasonable on the surface (pun intended) but when one looks at the mechanics of it, well, let's put it this way. You spend 30 minutes with a fish that is fighting for its life, land and then throw the fish back. That's like having a psychopath chase you thru your own home for a half hour, corner you, put a knife to your throat and then draw the knife across your throat just enough to draw blood and then laugh out loud and slap you on the back and say: "Just kidding, wasn't that fun?" No, not really.

Once again, if a person fishes to eat, respects all laws and property I don't have a problem with it. I guess my problem is more with the catch and release aspect of it. I understand catch and release. I really do. I just think that it is neccessary but also cruel. My opinion alone.

I know this will probably piss some folks off. They will say I don't know hunting or fishing. That may be true. What I do know, is me. Bow and arrow hunting is a whole other situation. What I don't like about "hunting with a rifle" is the stacked odds in favour of the human.

I'm sorry if my comments piss anyone off. They are not meant to do that. Just make us think of what we are doing, why we are doing it and examining our justification for doing what we do.

Being at the top of the food chain may purportedly give us a right to deal with those lower on the food chain than us, however the other side of the coin is that it also forces upon us a tremendous responsibility and obligation.

We all want our children, grandchildren and future generations of humans to see/know what a cougar, grizzly/polar bear, ermine, Sperm whale and dolphins are and being able to see them either in the wild or on film in their natural habitat.

Not being able to see the majesty of Canadian Geese flying overheard in their V formation would to my mind be in irreparable loss.

Thanks for reading if you've made it this far.
Peap
I totally respect your thought.
I do make sure my weapons and ammo are in a safe and locked area when not in use. I do purchase a hunting/fishing license every year. I do take precautions before I take the shot. I aim at the animal...make sure that there are not hunters/houses behind it...make sure the area behind the animal is safe to shoot...I take all the care in the world...I do respect hunting and know what it can do...
Fishing is another story for me...I love fishing and will never give it up...I love fishing with all my soul...it's soothing, calming, and just damn right relaxing...Speaking of the matter I want to learn to fly-fish.
I keep for the food as well in fishing...a good trout cooked with breading and flour all fried up....almost orgasmic I think...naughty.gif

anyway T_B,
I do respect your decision...all I'm asking is to respect mine...
the_burner
I very much respect your right and that you love both hunting and fishing, that is a given Peap. I would never deprive a safe hunter and fisherman their right. I just don't think they are right for me. That is all. It will be one of the few things that we see differently. What is good for you, is your business. 'Nuff said. icon_smile.gif thumbup1.gif

Many people, (self included) hunted decades ago for food, and that is the when and how of my experience. Hunting was not undertaken for sport or trophy, and fortunately during that time period those that hunted for the most part, only hunted for food, and with a procedure of how, and what was to be taken, i.e., in terms of rules and morals. The same applied to fishing-with the general rules of fishing, limits, and conservation practices. The last time I hunted was almost five decades ago in the military-army. Interestingly enough, in a place called Fort Hood, Texas. At that time period, hunting was on a special team of marksmen that would cull the wounded deer from the population (used an 8mm, or an MI 30/06). Unfortunately, some hunters would only wound the animal, and it would get away from them. The point of our squad was to hunt these guys down, and finish them off quickly, and as painlessly as possible-shoulder-heart shots or head. My rate was about three or four wounded deer ... two with arrows still in them!

BTW, have worked on small arms repair for decades, and the person that hunts usually does take care of their equipement-some small arms that I have worked on in the past would indicate those that respected their equipement and had some knowledge ... really seperating them from those that are true jerk-offs, and perhaps should be hunted themselves-for sport of course! thumbup1.gif

Peap
Not trying to intrude on anyone's beliefs...but I wondered to myself in shop and though...When was Jesus born?....I looked it up and came up with some awkward evidence...

Israeli meteorologists tracked December weather patterns for many years and concluded that the climate in Israel has been essentially constant for at least the last 2,000 years. The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible states that, "broadly speaking, weather phenomena and climatic conditions as pictured in the Bible correspond with conditions as observed today" (R.B.Y. Scott, Vol. 3, Abingdon Press, Nashville, 1962, p. 625).

The temperature in the area of Bethlehem in December averages around 44 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) but can drop to well below freezing, especially at night. Describing the weather there, Sara Ruhin, chief of the Israeli weather service, noted in a 1990 press release that the area has three months of frost: December with 29 F. (minus 1.6 C.); January with 30 F. (minus 1.1 C.) and February with 32 F. (0 C.).

Snow is common for two or three days in Jerusalem and nearby Bethlehem in December and January. These were the winter months of increased precipitation in Christ's time, when the roads became practically unusable and people stayed mostly indoors.

This is important evidence to disprove a December date for Christ's birth. Note that, at the time of Christ's birth, the shepherds tended their flocks in the fields at night. "Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields," wrote one Gospel writer, "keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:icon_cool.gif. A common practice of shepherds was keeping their flocks in the field from April to October, but in the cold and rainy winter months they took their flocks back home and sheltered them.

One commentary admits that, "as these shepherds had not yet brought home their flocks, it is a presumptive argument that October had not yet commenced, and that, consequently, our Lord was not born on the 25th of December, when no flocks were out in the fields; nor could He have been born later than September, as the flocks were still in the fields by night. On this very ground the nativity in December should be given up. The feeding of the flocks by night in the fields is a chronological fact, which casts considerable light upon this disputed point" (Adam Clarke's Commentary, Abingdon Press, Nashville, note on Luke 2:icon_cool.gif.

Another study source agrees: "These humble pastoral folk are out in the field at night with their flock—a feature of the story which would argue against the birth (of Christ) occurring on Dec. 25 since the weather would not have permitted it" (The Interpreter's One-Volume Commentary, Abingdon Press, Nashville, 1971, note on Luke 2:4-7).

Ok i came in this kinda late lol.

Burner i respect you not only for the fact that you value life both human and animal, but also the Peap, and other members here can have a conversation about the subject and not go off on us. As a fellow hunter I've never killed for just a trophy, i always eat my catch. I have been with other hunters who after killing an animal they just throw away the rest, and I always jump on their asses.
As far as fishing, well i seem to do more sitting and drinking then I actually do catching fish!!!!!

Well today i got up at 5am after a long night of drinking and drove the the Bay Area, wasn't that bad since I was in Concord, but never the less it was 0500! Did this big deal with a buddy where i went on his parents yacht and had to deal with rich people......... thumbdown.gif Thats about it.
the_burner
Thank-you Snuffy. That was very gracious of you. I don't have the right, EVER, to tell anyone else what to do other than in dire emergencies where I see someone about to royally feck up themselves or themselves and the rest of us. Other than that, the only right I have is to state my opinion and point out what I believe to be realities. Further, I also have an obligation to others to teach by example from what little I know, to just empathy and understanding and to promote peace rather than dissention. All hunters and fishers have the right to hunt as long as they have the appropriate equipment, licences, access to the appropriate land and water, understand safety for themselves and others, are not cruel to the animals or fish and don't waste what they have killed/caught.

Maybe in my older years I've finally achieved a modicum of wisdom and empathy. Maybe I won't convince anyone to give up hunting, that's not my goal, however what is my goal is that they do it as safely as possible, not pull a V.P., (LOL) and use all that they kill. Thank-you, once again, Peap and Snuffy for your graciousness and not going postal on me for not promoting hunting. Always appreciated. yes.gif

The boy finally put in my new headlight today! I had to resort to the dreaded female ultimatum (something I swore I would NEVER do), but he's been dragging his feet because it's cold and I have to drive 60 miles out of town to work the next two days.

And yes, I know...I should know how to put in the blasted thing myself. And I do...but the way my car is set up it required pulling the battery and one of the chassis supports, and I don't remove things from my car if I'm not sure how to put them back. Besides...he told me if I bought it he'd put it in. It's not MY fault he waited until after winter hit with a vengeance to do it. icon_lol.gif

Other than that, I've done just about nothing. Days off don't really suck.

Repaired an old watch-many parts all over the place. Went off to the store, and got another one-under $17.00, with feaures needed just to tell time and glow in the dark! Seems less expensive to just do new ones, instead of replacing the battery today.
