FORT WORTH, Texas — Winds of 60-80 mph ripped off store awnings, knocked down power lines and split trees in several Texas counties Thursday as a severe line of thunderstorms moved east across the state.
Tornado watches and flash flood watches were issued for dozens of counties from San Angelo and Abilene to Dallas. There were no immediate reports of any deaths or serious injuries.
Some brief tornado touchdowns were reported between San Angelo and Abilene, but most of the damage was caused by strong straight-line winds, said Alan Moller, National Weather Service meteorologist in Fort Worth.
He said most areas were getting half an inch to an inch of rain because "it's moving very fast so it's only across any given area for 20 to 25 minutes."
In Breckenridge, about 90 miles west of Fort Worth, photographer Tony Pilkington was eating lunch Thursday with his wife, Carla, and their 3-year-old daughter, Anna, at Mr. Jim's Pizza when wind gusts knocked out electricity.
"Signs started flying outside, and the next thing I know, you couldn't see anything," he said. "It was scary being there with my daughter."
Parts of U.S. 180 were littered with signs, tree limbs, power lines and even a satellite dish, Pilkington said. Awnings were ripped off businesses, portable storage buildings were upside down in residents' yards and police car windshields were smashed, Pilkington said.
There were reports of homes and other buildings damaged in Baylor, Archer and Jones counties.
Moller said meteorologists don't believe there have been many strong tornados, but they won't know until they can survey damage Friday.
"They're such rural areas out there; there may have been some significant tornado events that we don't know about so far," Moller said.

last night-
had dinner with my parents and son, then got started on the Jeep's cooling problem about 9pm.
got everything out in an hour, and sat there and pondered spending another $150 on a new electric fan and larger tranny cooler. Decided it's better to be in for a dollar than try and save a dime and hurt the motor.
At 11pm, ran to the LAPS and bought the above. Installed by 1:30, and called it a night after I installed the fan on the new radiator. Figured since I calked around the perimeter of it with Permatex black, I might want to give it time to dry without having gravity pull it away from how I'd filleted it to the radiator core, so I sat it down and cleaned up. In bed by 3am.
Up at 7, to work by 8, and there's been not much of a thing to do since, considering I am going on travel Monday.
Pfeh. I spent more on the cooling system yesterday than I did to buy the Jeep! <$145 for the radiator, $90 for a fan, $40 for a tranny cooler... I paid $200 for the Jeep!> But I've got a seriously brutish cooling system now since I bypassed the in-rad tranny cooler and put a second, much larger cooler in series with the one the prior owner installed. I don't anticipate any further problems with cooling. I'd coppersealed the old rad and nearly talked myself out of buying new, but when I took out the old one and saw how much sealant it had taken to seal the leaks <5 top rows sealed with copper> I knew it was the right way to go about it.
Still-- hated to spend that much money on it. Couple that with the new seat I got for the Jeep <driver's side seat was basically destroyed by whatever the prior owner did, and was tweaking hell out of my back>, and it was a $500 day. But at last I'm getting it to where large expenditures of money aren't needed to keep it on the road and make it comfortable. Most of the stuff from here out is welding time and a hundred bucks or so worth of steel.
Been suffering all day from said effects of the seat. Haven't had a chance to put it in yet-- that's top goal tomorrow morning.

Started taking the old shower screen off the wall only to find out how stong an adhesive silicone sealant is. Stronger then the tile adhesive anyway. Ended up having to take eight tiles off the wall to get the shower screen off. Luckily we have two boxes of tiles from when I originally tiled the batroom nine years ago so I've stuck up replacements, going to grout them tomorrow.
Watched F1 qualifying as well.
